Two friends have had very upsetting experiences at vets recently.
Yesterday, a friend had an appointment to have her dog put to sleep, she had a 10.30 appointment but had to wait outside, with a distressed dog for an hour.
My friend was also, understandably stressed and emotional too.
Couple of weeks ago, another friend had to have her dog put to sleep, she wasn’t allowed in the vets so it was done in the boot of her car.She asked if she could take the dog inside if she wore a mask and gloves, but was refused.
Both with different vets.
Not acceptable.

totally agree with you! how heartless and uncaring of them to do that, not just for the dogs but their owners too.
i was at our vets after being on the phone constantly for 4 days beforehand and no one was answering it, eventually get thr and get told to bring the dog down for 10am, when i got there several people where sat in their cars waiting, so i tried to phone them as instructed but hey guess what? no one answering it again, so eventually the "nurse" came out, i stood well back so she could hand the dog over to its owner and once she had finished informed her of being here and waiting in the car, next their was evenone around out of their cars too, the "nurse" ran inside and the next thing we got shouted at for "yelliing" at the "nurse! ok fine, your not the only vets and left and went to one in towards stockton to be seen immediately without any of the fuss from what had been our "family" vets.
the other owners also left so that emotional "nurse" cost the surgery about £20,000 in business that day

We had to have our dog put down in June, and our experience was very different. Yes initially we had to meet outside after phoning the vet to let them know we were there and the vet came out to talk to us. She took the dog inside while we waited outside, and after examining our dog she came back out to talk to us again. After much discussion it was decided that as he was 15 and clearly very ill, it might be kindest to say goodbye to him. Only one of us could go in, and my wife said she wanted to, so she was given a mask and gloves and went in with the vet. Once the deed was done she and the vet came out, with the vet making sure we were both ok. We said our goodbyes to the vet and left.

Colin

Not as serious as having a dog put down but very shortly I will need to contact the vet to get a repeat prescription. The vet hasn't seen the dog within the last 3 months and I believe they are not allowed to issue prescriptions if they haven't seen the dog within that time. Usually they email me the prescription so I can buy the items cheaper online and then I pay them for the prescription by bank transfer. I am hoping they don't want me to have to drive all the way to the vets surgery and sit outside waiting just so they can see the dog...then charge me for the privilege!

Truly sorry for all of you who've lost your beloved pets.
I'm shocked and saddened to hear of these experiences with your vets. Our vet practice only has two vets and they deal with domestic pets, farm animals and wild animals, too. Somehow, the two of them have managed to keep carrying on seeing everyone. We're lucky in that the island got together very early on with volunteer deliveries and vet prescriptions have gone out via this system, via people going up and collecting medicines for locals and the bus drivers also participating. If you can get to the vets, they come out and check the animals in the car; some get taken in but sadly, if putting them to sleep is the best for them, like my friend's very elderly and unwell Jack Russell, they'll do this in the car - it's always been their policy to put animals to sleep in familiar surroundings and since home visits aren't allowed, it's the best they can do.

Normal procedure now at our vets is that you make an appointment, turn up at the appointed time and phone from outside the surgery when you get there, then someone will come out and collect the pet for examination inside the surgery. You wait outside, then they come out and discuss with you outside.

Colin

I feel really sorry for people who have had to have their pets put to sleep under these circumstances; it's a very traumatic experience in "normal" times, but now, with having to wait outside, it's even worse.
We needed to take our cat to the vet a months or so ago, as she'd been beaten up by the local tom cat. Our vet is a one-man band and really cares for the animals he sees, so we're very lucky. On arrival we were told to wait, after a few minutes the receptionist came out and took details of people waiting. Two dogs were seen before our cat, in the car park (looked like they were having their boosters) then the vet came to our car, asked what the problems were and took our cat in. It was really horrible not being able to go in with her. He came out with her and told us what he'd found, and what he'd given her, and she was fine the next day. I then had to go in to pay, but that was a different entrance to the one the vet and receptionist used.
So all in all no complaints about our visit to the vet, but we didn't have the traumatic experience of having to put our pet to sleep, like some of you had.

Sorry you lost your dog, it is never easy to say goodbye. My beloved dog Isla had to be put to sleep last year. She was unable to walk much and to spare her more pain and have everyone looking at us and knowing she was happy in the car we opted to have her PTS in the car. We drove round to the side of the building for privacy and I sat with her while she was kindly and gently allowed to go. To be honest I would do this again as it saved her the stress of being in the vet's allowing her to be somewhere she felt safe and gave us privacy. I found out vet to be very caring to not only our sweet dog but to us.
