If you go simply by the numbers alone you are probably right, but what if those people hadn't "nailed themselves into a cupboard"?

There is still a lot we don't know, but one thing I am certain of is that lock-down such as it was, probably stopped matters being a whole lot worse. It did keep a lid on it to a certain extent. It is quite possible that if we hadn't gone into lock-down, those figures could have been 4 times worse, 40 times worse, or even 4,000 times worse. We will probably never know. What if we had gone into a much tighter lock-down a month earlier? The figures might have been just a tiny fraction of what we got. Again, we will probably never know.

Just taken a look at that map and it looks like instances in my area have been very low in that period. I do know though from very local sources that there have been 4 confirmed cases in my village, but I don't know them or even know of them personally. I don't know when those cases were though, they could have been at the peak.

Yep agree with graham here 2020 will go down as a horrible year bit will also be looked at as massive overreaction and media led panic. As Colin says above had we had lockdown a month earlier and worn face coverings at the start then we would be pretty much through this by now.
But what really annoys me is people getting annoyed about people being upset at missing holidays and weddings etc. People work and save hard for these things and to get it cancelled through no fault of their own and then having to fight for refunds etc yet there at some who say look at the bigger picture etc etc. And not being allowed to go to the pub has already cost many jobs and will continue to do so until they are allowed to reopen - if there will be any left to reopen that is.
Really grates my gears tbh the bigger picture isn’t just how many people have been infected.

Yep, it's a great link because it shows the situation NOW (or at least last week) not going back months (btw the link is updated every seven days) It's a direct feed from the official data published by the ONS and PHE

It shows just how much more limited CV19 is now compared to months ago, and importantly where the cases are - as you will see vast swathes (and by far the majority) of England are completely free of cases in the last week

AND of course many of the positive tests now being found are being picked up due to massively increased testing (up to 195,000 a day) and that testing is hugely targeted in areas where any case is found - more testing = more positives found, which is a good thing as it means local and personal measures can be taken to lockdown / self isolate etc.

It's not over by any means, and it's no time for complacency, but it's improving and decent data such as this helps us all see things in more perspective

Back to the topic of what's coming this winter - unfortunately CV19 is here to stay for quite some time, but lets hope everyone continues to take the appropriate precautions and life slowly gets back to something resembling more normal.
