One of the strangest interviewers was Thomas Edison. When he interviewed candidates for research assistant positions, he offered them a bowl of soup. Why? He wanted to see whether they would add salt or pepper to the soup before they tasted it.

Those who did were automatically ruled out. Edison wanted people who didn't make assumptions, since assumptions tend to be innovation killers.

Eamon Holmes and his Mrs are losing a telly job, to be replaced by Dermot O'leary and a black presenter (i forget her name). The admitted reason being, the tv company need more diversity.

It would be interesting to know your source for this. Positive discrimination is (to the best of my knowledge) illegal in this country so I'm not sure I can see many employers admitting to it.

Well, Mr Holmes himself didnt tell me. So i have obviously read it. Of course, it may or may not be true. But 'diversity' has been a watchword among the media for yonks now, so why it would be doubted, i dont know. As for positive discrimination being illegal. How come is there a 'black policemans federation'?

Ah newspaper speculation then! I read similar speculation in an article but realised it fitted the paper's usual narrative too precisely to be credible!

I'm Not sure the existence of an association for black police officers has any relevance to discrimination in employment law.

There has become a tendency on the internet I think for people to post stuff as "fact" then when challenged say "Oh, it might not be true", also I note how polarised language is getting like people posting on facebook "No-one is following the lockdown" or "Its entirely the kids spreading it", all, clearly wrong and divisive.

TV presenters being replaced to improve diversity - I have no problem with that at all.   It's about time.

As for it being Eamonn Holmes being dropped - he is a wholly unpleasant person in my opinion so him being dropped is a little bit on icing on a cake.

Getting back to job applications and interviews.
Have you ever been asked to complete a psychometric test?
Several years ago, I applied for a position, I attended the first interview and was invited for a second interview which comprised a psychometric test.
The test consisted of say 100 questions.
Each question was 2 statements, the requirement was to quickly choose the statement that applied to you as quickly as possible, your first thoughts that came to mind.
I completed the test, the results were revealed to me, I was subsequently invited for a third interview and got the job.
The advantage from the company's point of view was that during my time there, everybody I encountered in the company would do all they could to help you and make your life easier.
It worked for that company.

Yeah, they become easy once you've done a load of them - the whole there is no right or wrong answer thing is a bit nonsense as you can tell from an interview whether they'll be a good fit.   They are just upsold nonsense from whoever designs them if you ask me.

Yes I tend to agree about so-called facts.

I hate all forms of discrimination, but I think positive discrimination is possibly the worst of all. Real non-discrimination means that the best candidate gets the job, regardless of who they are. I would hate to be a "token whatever" in any position, just picked because I fitted a certain diversity profile. I like to think that every job I got, I got because I was the best candidate. Mind you, I think sometimes I may have been the only candidate.
