We are seriously considering having a new driveway. We live on a corner and have one driveway where we can just about park our moho and my car. My husbands car is parked on the road, which is not ideal as there are already several cars parked there. We would like a new drive round the other side of the bungalow. At the moment it is lawned with a few large bushes. The kerb would need to be dropped. Has anyone else had a new driveway? If so, would you mind giving me an idea of the cost? We haven’t got a clue how much it would be. We are trying to weigh up if it would be worth it. TIA

Hi, just make sure you you get several quotes. Are you hoping to have it paved, tarmaced or resin finish? Also make sure if you have it tarmaced that you have a good solid stone base then basecourse tarmac and then a surface course. Some will try to just put a top layer on stone and whilst it may look ok for a while it will soon degrade. Sorry can't help with costs but it will depend on sqaure meterage. Shame you weren't nearer, I could offer you some people we have worked with.

Dropped kerb will need Council permission. They have set fees and may require their contractor to do the work.

Could be £1,000 plus but may depend if any services under the pavement need lowering.

Tearing up and relaying a new driveway will depend on area and finish required. You will also need to consider how it will be drained.

When I had my drive block paved about 6yrs ago the cost was around £50 a square metre. Probably risen a bit since then & it will cost more if you have the more fancy blocks. If you do get it block paved ensure you use a local bloke with a good reputation. A cheap job will not have a proper base & will get rutted where the car drives onto it & as pointed out it needs to be properly drained with a soak away. A good tradesman will include all that in the quote.

The drop kerb will need a survey from the council at fixed cost. Where I live £300 just for the survey not the work. The dropped kerb has to be done by a council approved contractor. There are also rules about positioning & length of dropped kerbs. Look on your county council website. There will be a section on dropped kerbs somewhere. It will tell you the rules & whether the dropped kerb is feasible. You need to work that out for yourself because survey cost is not refundable if dropped kerb cannot be approved for any reason.

We had our driveway rebuilt about 4 years ago. For us there was only one choice. Go to Marshalls website and you can find nearest approved installers. May cost more than some of the contractors, but you get a guarantee with the job. Plus the fact Marshalls probably produce the best materials anyway.
If I remember correctly we have room for car and caravan at cost of aroiund £5k, but I could be wrong with that figure.

Had our block paving taken out and redone with resin finish. Dug out old blocks and base, lad ne perimeter blocks and filled with stone ( two layers of different size) then laid self-draining tarmac. Finished when the weather was good enough with resin in scour of our choosing. The drive is double width can take out caravan 7.25 metres with the car 4.75 metres parked behind it and leaves enough room alongside for two 4x4s. They also did the same for the path across the front of the house up to the four door and continued on to a side gate. They insisted on installing a drain across the front of the garages - no drain - no guarantee! This was completed last April/May. and cost £7500. Very much admired by passers-by and several people have enquired about the contractors who were local and registered Trusted Traders. We had used them 13 years earlier to lay a patio in the back garden.

If you could use the same drive and park in front of the house, you’ll save a heap of time & some money on having to jump through so many Council hoops. (Still need either permission or a letter of comfort confirming that you don’t need permission to pave your front lawn.

When you get quotes, you need to see a drive someone has done that is at least 3 or 4 years old. Even crap jobs look good for a couple of years. You need around 10 inches taking off the finished level depending on how firm it is underneath. With 99% of drives, the base is 99% of the job. Tarmac, block paving, imprinted concrete will all crack and move if what they are laid on isnt 100% solid.

Our cost 6k couple years back.
3 cars across front.
30' x 8' down side
3 car width across back, which was just topped again.
All with thick blue and red bricks around edge.

And that was mates rates.
