Hi Monty
I have an Apple Watch. It is connected to my iPhone and when my phone rings or messages come into my phone via text message or WhatsApp or by email etc I can answer the calls and read the messages on the watch. It is tricky to reply to messages on the watch because you can’t type, you can use voice recognition to record a message and convert it to text on the watch but it isn’t always very accurate so I don’t often use it for that. You really need to have it linked to an iPhone to get the best from it.
As far as I am aware you can’t play games on it but then, I have never tried!
As your son suggests, one of the best features of the Apple Watch is the fitness tracker features. The watch measures your exercise minutes, calorie burn, inactive hours, step count and you can download a plethora of other apps that measure all sorts of aspects of health and fitness. It can track your heart rate and even does a basic ECG and notifies you if it spots irregular heart rhythms such as Atrial Fibrillation which can be life threatening. One of my friends who is a tech nerd bought one for his 75 year old dad who thought it was a waste of money until the second day he wore it when it told him it had spotted a potentially dangerous heart rhythm and recommended he see a doctor. The doctor sent him to the hospital right away and basically, it saved his life as he was days away from a probable heart attack and needed a triple bypass.
I also have it linked to my online calendar so it notifies me of upcoming appointments and meetings, it has a timer, stopwatch and alarm clock and it even tells the time! There are dozen of other apps you can download as well.
To be honest with you I love mine but I do think it is expensive for what it is. I wouldn’t have bought it for myself but I won the Amazon voucher on this site last year for the campsite review so when I put it towards it, it made it seem less expensive!
