We have an elderly cat, and did some preparation before bringing home the bouncy 4 year old rescue cocker. Cat’s food area is out of dog’s reach. We kept them in separate rooms when the dog came home. Smelling under the door... Come bed time, dog went into her crate with the Bonio (having checked she was ok with it), and cat was let into the same room for the night. Thereafter, careful observation of body language. And - most important - stroke one then the other, over & over, to transfer each other’s taste & smell between them. It took several weeks, but they’re fine now. Not particularly pals, but TH tolerate each other. Cat sleeps in dog’s open crate during the day.
Good luck. Persevere. It’ll be worth it.
That is very useful, thank you!
I have installed a child gate so that the cat can have some dog-free area. I shall put the spare litter tray in the bathroom for her.
I have planned to separate the two and introduce them gently to each other under supervision.
Fingers firmly crossed that she will let him stay! Hopefully she can be bribed with roast chicken and lots of cuddles.
