Please beware, we recently sold our beloved Campervan to a company advertised in the Camping and Caravan Club magazine. I am happy to name and shame if it is allowed (please let me know) The initial contact was by phone and we gave them full, honest detailed info about our campervan. They gave us a firm offer of £2000 and when we rang to arrange collection they said the money was in an envelope waiting for us so collection was arranged. A young man turned up and said he would only offer us £500 for it. After a great deal of negotiation we finally agreed a price of £1000 just to get rid of him as he was extremely arrogant. He said he knew nothing about us receiving cash and proceeded to do a bank transfer. As he left we checked our bank and he had not done the transfer correctly as it did not go through. We called him back and he did the transfer correctly and took the van. Whilst he was here we completed all the necessary paperwork for the DVLA (he did not appear to know what to fill in or send off) and today we received a letter from the DVLA saying we were still the registered owners. We have sorted it out with the DVLA but I am just concerned that anyone dealing with this supposedly reputable company are aware of the problems that we have had.

The name of the Company is West Sussex Caravans. The odd thing was, when the bank transfer finally came through it was from Edward James Ltd. Contacting the magazine and writing a letter is a brilliant idea. Thank you.

Check them out on Companies House website, too. After friends had some issues (not camping product related) with non-payment by purchaser, we found out that the business that bought the goods was a front and they had to take another company to task. It took them over a year to get their money.
Glad you got sorted.

They didn’t exactly get sorted did they as they got £1000 less than what they were expecting.
------------- XVI yes?
As well is two words!
How does a sage know everything about everything? or does he? or does he just think he does?
Remember, if you buy something you bought it, not brought it.
Theres a couple of odd things here, you accepted £1000 - ONE THOUSAND POUNDS - less just to get rid of him? Did the promise of "money in an envelope" not ring any alarm bells? Unsure why cash in hand is so important - its more the sort of thing people do to avoid paying tax.
I dont mean to sound critical but "caveat venditor" springs to mind. I hope the wisdom of what happened to you is associated to all the readers as not specific to that trading company, more specific to how you should be wary everywhere.
After several threads about caravans, MHs and campervans selling for inflated prices during this staycation, with high demand driving prices up, the OP’s vehicle does seem cheap!

Did he give reasons for decreasing the original offer by £1500? You say 'after a great deal of negotiation' you settled on £1000, were the negotiations about vehicle condition on the day? Were you ultimately happy with that amount?
I'm not defending this company's actions, at all, but surely you could have refused the revised offer and sent him packing? Also, bank transfers are now common and quick nowadays, so you really should not have agreed for anyone to remove the vehicle from your premises until you had confirmed receipt of funds to your account.
It sounds a bit like this guy was controlling the situation, rather than you. It's a shame you didn't feel able to put a halt to proceedings to allow yourself some thinking time, if you felt he was steering you in a direction you didn't want to go.
P.S. If you genuinely feel you were coerced into accepting what you consider to be an unfair offer, just to get rid of their agent, it's worth contacting West Sussex Caravans and speaking to their MD. Also follow-up your complaint in writing to that company.
Could it even be that the agent was self employed and their "pay" was the difference between what they managed to give you for it and what West Sussex caravans was paying them?
To be honest if someone was prepared to save me £1000 to get rid of me because I was being arrogant I'd be more full of myself than Robbie Williams on stage.
We accepted less because the vehicle was due to be taxed and insured, which we did not want to do as we had our new vehicle arriving the following day and couldnt afford to run 2. To be honest, I really want the whole thing over and to move on. I only posted to make people aware of the nefarious selling practices.
