My Gas central heating boiler is 16 yrs old.
I have a maintenance contract with SSE for £200 p year and includes annual serviceI. I pay first £50 of any repair.
The boiler has had many parts replaced over the years.
Looking for advice.
Do I continue with this arrangement or replace the boiler, interest free with a 10 yr parts and labour warranty and save over £100 a year on the maintenance contract?
Will a new boiler be a lot more efficient and cheaper to run?
My current system is working fine and not due a service til March.
I read that combi boilers have a life expectancy of 10- 15 yrs.
You may get your annual cover cheaper. I have just paid £150 with John Lewis insurance which includes an annual inspection and no excess to pay.
If your boiler is fine I'd carry on, but at your next service ask the engineer what would be involved if you needed a new boiler. Regulations change and a new boiler will have to be installed to meet up to date regulations so it may not be a straight swap. You may also need a powerflush to meet the warranty terms of the new boiler.
A gas engineer once told me that if "it wasn't broke, don't fix it". He said that he never touched his own boiler unless it had a fault and that maintenance contracts were a waste of time.
In general most 'machines' will either fail early on and be repaired under warranty or continue to work error free for many years. £200 pa for 16 years is £3200! How much would you have to spend if you didn't have a contract? If you spent half of that and the boiler was unreliable, you could afford a new guaranteed one. You can also choose to use a local, recommended engineer.
------------- Two drifters off to see the world.
I'm tired of reality, so I'm off to look for a good fantasy.
we had our boiler replaced in nov 2019, its a worcester bosch one, it has the 10 year warranty which covers all parts and labour, the yearly service is £70.
we have had no complaints whatsoever with it, it cost £3000 all in took them 2 days to fit, but was up and running on the first day and the second was just tidy up and make sure everything was done and floor boards back correctly. i couldnt have been more happy with the job that was done by Tom who is local to both of us.
bearing in mind your choices are going to become very limited in the next few years and you wont be able to have a gas boiler fitted and you would only be able to have those horrible het pump things hung on some wall space which from what i have read are very expensive to run, then you need to make your mind up very quickly
Our boiler is 25 years old this year, I had a contract with B/Gas until last year, for the amount I paid I could have had the boiler replaced at least twice!
The only advantage with a contract is that they do respond if you have a fault whereas getting a local gas fitter to attend can be difficult at short notice, I would never bother with a contract again.
The engineer told me it was on its's last legs 5 years ago and said if it broke down they couldn't get spares for it, that was a load of rubbish there were loads on the internet.
A gas fitter told me to stick with the system that I have, I know several people who have had combi boilers installed and have had problems.
When they serviced my boiler the last time the report said I could possibly save app £25 pa if I had a new boiler installed, big deal!

Had our old boiler 25 years,it replaced a 25 year old floor standing boiler. It was past It's sell by date by 10 years but if it ain't bust, the only problem we had was in the Autumn and there was gales it used to blow out the pilot light which we struggled to light, should have had a new thermocouple but it only did it once all winter. Now we have a Combi It's out of the way(in airing cupboard) only works when you want hot water and there isn't a great big Copper cylinder full of slowly cooling water.
We had a new combi boiler supplied and fitted for approx £2500 two years ago. The same guy charges £60 to service it each year, and its got a 10 year warranty (but has to be serviced each year to keep the warranty valid).
Our previous boiler was a back boiler fitted by British Gas it lasted about 15 years and we only had it serviced twice (oops).
We had a nightmare a few years ago when our boiler packed in the day after Boxing Day and we couldn’t get anyone to even come out and look at it before January so we had no heating (apart from a couple of oil filled radiators) and no hot water during one of the coldest periods of the year. Eventually we managed to get someone to come out on the 3rd January who charged us a fortune and then told us the boiler was too old and unfixable. We then got a different company out who said the same thing and we started the process of getting a new boiler. This in itself was also a nightmare as in the period between getting the old boiler fitted and when it needed to be replaced, the regulations around gas boilers had changed and all the gas pipework in our house was the wrong size for the modern boilers so we had to get all the gas pipework changed as well! The whole thing was very expensive and took an age to complete and we were without heating and hot water for almost a month in total. Thankfully my work has a gym with changing rooms and showers so my husband and I were able to shower at my work but it was a difficult cold month!
We eventually got a Worcester Bosch Combi boiler fitted with a 10 year warranty and it has been great so far. The remote thermostatic controller stopped working a few months ago (the boiler was still controllable from the panel on the boiler itself) and we phoned the warranty helpline and they had someone out with a new controller within a few days. I remember after we got the boiler fitted my husband commenting that our gas bill and gone down so the new boiler must have been more efficient. The annual service was originally £45 but now (probably about 5 years later) it has gone up to £65.
If you decide on a new boiler, wait until the weather is warmer before getting it fitted as if your pipework is the old style then you may be without heat for longer than you imagine.
Thanks for your comments, i will stick with the current situation until the service in March and speak to the engineer.
SSE have been excellent with their service contract, never had problem with call outs or parts..so far.
Just one quick thought jsparkes201148 - I’ve been looking for a new 2.0l Turbo Deisel to tow with and I’d stand more chance of finding an elephant egg.
If the green push continues at pace it won’t be long before you can’t buy a new gas central heating boiler either. So it may be worth considering a change to future proof yourself for a few extra years before you are forced into investing in the dreaded horrendously expensive and reportedly inefficient heat exchanging environmentally friendly heating system!
We changed a 16 year old boiler about two years ago. We previously had a system with hot water tanks. All that was ripped out and move to a new location. We had Worcester Bosch Combi which gives you hot water on demand rather than having to heat it up and store it. Whilst I am sure the new boiler is much more efficient than the old it was not having to heat up water that saved the money. We got British Gas to do it, similar quote to a local company, it was expensive, £4000, but as I say we did move it and got rid of all the tanks. One thing to note that you can buy Worcester boilers which are hydrogen ready as there is a view that once they can produce that gas cheaply enough they will gradually mix it with ordinary gas so there is a bit of future proofing there.
I'm using a Worcester Bosch combi boiler too. I just get it serviced annually, no contract of any sort. I have a bit of back-up in that I have a woodburner that can also take smokeless fuel, and I have an electric shower - and my camping stove of course! I'd rather put a service contract amount of money in a savings account in case of problems, then I could dip into it and I've only spent what I need to spend.
------------- Always edited for sloppy typing - when I spot it!
We have a Worcester Bosh and just pay the company who installed to service each year, no contract Therefore we can always change service to another company anytime if we wish. Essential to to have annual service or warranty is voided.
