We have moved around quite a bit but always within East Anglia. We think it's a lovely place to live. The weather's usually good (for Britain), the people around here are friendly, there's some beautiful countryside, and it's very good for travel. It's just the political situation I detest. Can't have everything I suppose.

Only real downside of living here is that we are quite a long way from the coast, but having said that we do have several coastal areas suitable for a day trip.

Colin, access to the coast is a must for us and we've never lived more than about 8 miles from the sea. In the days when Britain had railways, many of the towns round here were popular holiday destinations, but now only stretches of the 'permanent ways' remain.

Pic shows old railway line from Banff which is now a footpath to the Links caravan site and large beach. No trace remains of the station. The site of the old Banff station now has modern housing.

Great picture Capt., very atmospheric. Many places on the coast must have been devastated when they lost their rail link, I know of several in Norfolk alone.

We have only ever lived by the sea once, and that was when we first got married and moved to Clacton in Essex. We only stayed there a year though as it was much too cold and desolate in the winter and we were very young. Having only ever been there as visitors we didn't really realise that Clacton virtually closed in winter! The other problem was that because there was hardly any work around all year, only seasonal work, so we were both working flat out in summer and rarely got a chance to get anywhere near the beach. Then in winter we didn't want to! We lived literally about 200 yards from the beach, but we probably went on a beach more times when we lived inland than we did when we lived in Clacton.

Hunstanton was probably our nearest resort when we lived in Norfolk, and that was about 18 miles away, but once again we didn't go there much as I was a coach driver and worked really long and very unsociable hours. My wife has never driven so she couldn't go without me. It is probably still true to say that we visit the coast more now that we live well inland than we ever did when we lived much nearer.

We lived in Norfolk for a while. We were at RAF Coltishall. We liked going to the resorts like Cromer in the low season when it was quiet. Busy in high season. As was anywhere on the Broads. My wife worked at Norfolk and Norwich hospital.

I spent a few months at Wattisham too, they had Lightnings then which were loud! There used to be a fair few RAF and US bases in East Anglia.

We have been back a couple of times staying at C&CC site at Sandringham.

Sandringham is one of our favourite of the larger sites, and we have been there several times. We usually visit Norfolk once a year to see some of the friends we made when we lived there. Our last home in Norfolk was just up the road from RAF Marham, and I took several coach parties on visits there along with Mildenhall and Lakenheath. When we lived near Marham they had Victor tankers and Canberras there, and we had the occasional visit from Vulcans. When planes took off from there they usually took off right over our house, so if you didn't like planes it wasn't a good place to live. Fortunately, I do and I have often wished I had been a pilot. I did have a few lessons but I was over 50 then so could never have made it a career.

We found a lovely new little C&CC CS site last year at Middleton, so we might go there again this year.

i was lucky. i got St mawgan out of the bag and the first thing we all did was rent a flat in newquay! beaches galore.

colin, i was occasionally allowed to fly the victor simulator at Marham. that was good fun.

until i proved that it was impossible to loop a fully laden K2

I once flew that simulator too. I had taken a coach party there and they were being shown round so I went with them. When the party were offered a chance in the simulator, nobody seemed that keen so I jumped in. Wouldn't want to miss a chance like that! Wasn't the view out of those things atrocious! tiny little cockpit windows.

Another memorable experience I had was on a visit to Mildenhall. I was taking a coach load round the peri-track and the officer accompanying us asked me to stop. When I did I noticed an unusual shape in my offside mirror. Blackbird was approaching from behind on the adjacent runway. We got to watch it take off right alongside us. What a spectacle and what a sound!

There are some fabulous SR-71 stories floating around. Speedcheck is the most famous.

To stay on topic, this was taken in the middle of storm Francis the other night.

Thanks Stuart, we are in the foothills of the fens now.

Foothills of the Fens? A contradiction in terms, surely. Stand on a phonebook in the Fens, and you get a view.

Both Mick? If you mean Sandringham and the smaller site at Middleton (Westfields Camping Site), they are very different sites in very different locations. Westfields is a lovely small site just outside Kings Lynn, and is closer to the town and shopping centres. Sandringham on the other hand is a very much larger site on the way from Kings Lynn to Hunstanton. Both sites are quiet but very different. Westfields offers a more family-run atmosphere, (the owners live on site) whereas Sandringham has more of a corporate feel to it, although when we have been there we have always found the staff to be very friendly. Westfields is adults-only, whereas Sandringham caters for families, but as we tend to only go in school term time, it doesn't matter much to us.

As to which we prefer, that's a hard question to answer as they are so different and they are in different places. We have good friends in Dersingham and Heacham and Sandringham is much closer to them, but Westfields is cheaper and more convenient for supermarket food and a large retail park. In short, we like them both for different reasons and I would certainly recommend either of them.

Ah...sorry, no. I meant both the 'club' sites - 100 yards apart through the woods? Havent used any smaller sites near Sandringham. So the Middleton is a good one, is it?

I've never used the CMHC site at Sandringham Mick, as we are not members. In fact I've never even seen the entrance to it as it is on a different road. The C&CC site is great though. We normally try and get a pitch at the top end of the site near the entrance as the pitches are more random there and in among the trees. Further down the site the pitches are more regimented in rows, not how we usually like to be. At the top end the pitch numbers are on stones set into the ground, and the only rule is that some part of your unit must be as close as possible to the stone. It can be any way round you like though.

Westfields at Middleton is a lovely little site. We found it here on ukcampsite and when we came back I gave them a review on here. The toilet and shower block is probably one of the best we have seen anywhere, and the couple who own the site are very friendly and helpful.
