My hubby is 70 in feb and needs to renew his driving licence. If he renews online we know he won’t get c1 and d1 but will he still get b+e so he can still tow our caravan. Has anyone else applied online? Thanks for any help

Simple answer is YES!
Did mine online a couple of months ago. Very straightforward and quick service.

The licence change at 70 is only really a problem if you want to drive a motorhome over 3500kgs. If you step down your licence at 70 and you are, and intend to stay, a caravanner it makes no difference at all. Very easy to do online and any renewals, at three year intervals, are free. I would always suggest keeping photocopies of your original licence just in case.

Mine took about 4 days.Online. I can't drive anything over 3500kg now. You can drive a car and trailer up to 8250 kg combined. That is sufficient for any outfit we might have.
I still have my full motorbike license! Not that I have a bike.
If you wish to drive vehicles over 3500kg its a paper application with medical certificate. I decided it wasn't worth the hassle.
You have to cut your old license in two and return it. I waited until the new license arrived.

you are not allowed to tow a car & caravan over 3500kg combined weight after 70years of age on a B+E licence. You have to have a medical & apply for a C1E.
Apologies i am 74 when i was 70 i had to have a medical to tow over 3500kg.
It seems the law has changed & i am allowed to tow up to 8250kg without a medical. This must be a recent change.

It's been the law since 1997 if you passed your test before that.

That is incorrect. I am over 70 and can legally tow well over 3500kg. Our car is 2240kg and caravan is MTPLM 2000kg. There is no need for a medical. Also B+E is no longer applicable and if you have a B licence you can tow a combination exceeding 3500kg.

I am 71 and can drive a vehicle and trailer up to 8250 kg. You can check the information on the gov.uk website and look under driving licenses.

They changed the law after Covid and Brexit because there were not enough examiners to test the lorry drivers. Seems towing a caravan isn't dangerous at all without extra tuition.

simple terms
vehicle upto 3500kg plus trailer combo upto 7500kg tops.
van/motorhome upto 7500kg plus 750kg for trailer combo upto 8250kg.
so if you have a vehicle lets say weighs 6000kg you can have a trailer with a vehicle upto a combination weight of 8250kg. if the trailer weight is higher than 750kg it has to be a braked trailer

I drive my american motorhome with a trailer and renault kangoo combo which comes in just under 8250kg
