In our village back in the 1950s they used to test the alarm at midday on Saturdays. Maybe to do with the cold war? There was an RAF base nearby (Gaydon) where the V bombers regularly flew around.
I lived in North London in the 1950s and there used to be an old air-raid siren on the police station roof. They tested that on a Saturday too, and we could hear it at our house over a mile away.
