I reckon they think us old 'uns won't have compatible phones so will get killed off saving them a fortune on our inflation proofed pensions.

In our village back in the 1950s they used to test the alarm at midday on Saturdays. Maybe to do with the cold war? There was an RAF base nearby (Gaydon) where the V bombers regularly flew around.

We used to get a loud hooter going off and cars going around with sirens when we had exercises in the RAF. Usually monthly in Germany and inevitably at silly o clock am! Must have pleased the locals as many lived off base in the local village married quarter estate.
Once back in UK and living in our own place we got a phonecall.
I suspect if nuclear missiles are inbound the warning won't be much use.

I lived in North London in the 1950s and there used to be an old air-raid siren on the police station roof. They tested that on a Saturday too, and we could hear it at our house over a mile away.
