Hi all
I'm having a prolonged debate with my brother in law.
We travel to St Ives from up North quite regularly.
For some reason this year my BH thinks he's going to avoid the A30 as he says it'll be too busy, and take the A39 instead.
I think the A30 is the better option.
It'll be next Friday(May 26)
I'm aware that there can be hold ups due to accidents etc, but what are your opinions?
Its a light hearted debate, but surely, holiday traffic or not, the A30 is the easier of the two routes.
Thoghts?

He can try it once but I can guarantee he won’t do it again! My husband had that crazy notion many years ago and the journey felt never ending.

Long while since I've been down to deepest darkest Cornwall, but frequent visitor to western side of Exmoor NP, and day tripped out from there on A39 and A30 many a time. Got to opt for A30 as preference, and that's without the caravan in tow, no competition WITH the van!
Presume BIL is not towing a van along A39, wouldn't want to tow a van down Countisbury hill into Lynmouth, and then the hill out of Lynmouth (pray for no hill starts! - otherwise likely adding a buggered clutch to already knackered brakes from Countisbury hill! ).
Mate of mine lives on Exmoor National Park and when visiting him, he always says keep south of the park as much as possible when dragging the van! He knows a thing or two, he drags a big horsebox behind a Landrover!
The traffic is almost guaranteed to be horrible on a BH, but why add a more difficult route to the trip as well, A39 is significantly single carriage road so 60mph (if towing - 50mph) speed restriction on top of longer distance (and 60 will seem reckless in plenty of places!), A30 IIRC nearly all duel carriageway, so 70mph (60mph if towing) limit and a lot less miles. So your BIL thinks ALL the numerous resorts along north Devon coast are NOT going to be popular and roads congested on a BH then, we'll see!
As suggested, con the BIL into picking up the week's bar bills if he's later than you, and have the tab already started when he arrives! Reckon even if you are towing and he's solo, you should still beat him by a margin, road closures, massive delays aside.
Enjoy your hols, and try not to be too smug when he turns up well late in his knackered car!

Sorry Mick S, I've only just seen this.
The brother Law took my advice and used the A30 and got stuck in all sorts of traffic.
I, however, decide to travel on the day after and it was a breeze!
Allowed on site at 11am, arrived at site at 11:02 am
