Hi we will be travelling from Scotland to Southampton. Travelling with friends who will be in a separate car. Trying to work out rest stops as meeting places. First service station will be at Tebay services. Can anyone recommend our next stop - service station - about 3 hours from there (near Birmingham I think). Thanks in advance
As well is two words!
How does a sage know everything about everything? or does he? or does he just think he does?
Remember, if you buy something you bought it, not brought it.
If you are on the M6 Toll there is a services mid way on there. If you've been to Tebay, then you'll be hugely disappointed, but it does the trick. We use it when we are going to Berkshire.
Other services down the M6 north of Birmingham are not very exciting. And then it's a bit of a stretch until down the M42.
Been there, done that route. Didn’t use the toll but can’t remember where we stopped except the ones with M&S were pleasant. Took 10 hours from Ayrshire, passing Oxford. We stop every 2 hours to change drivers & OH needs a comfort break that often. He’s not good at maps so I navigate the complicated bits (round Birmingham, for example).
Cruise? We stayed at a brilliant B&B in the New Forest where you leave the car & they drive you to the ship.
Fiona.. Could you possibly tell me the name of the B&B ? Car parking at Southampton cruise terminals have gone through the roof ! I think my Wife just paid £245 for two weeks in August, outrageous as far as I am concerned.

Thanks. Hi we are staying overnight at a well reviewed B&B in the new forest - Twin Oaks who do the cruise park and shuttle. We have done the journey often as my brother lives in the Isle of Wight. But we don't usually stop often but we are travelling with friends this time who we will have a coffee break with.

For cruise parking we found a place on JUSTPARK. Worth a look.
The post is a little unclear, but are you meeting people at both service stations (Tebay and and another?)
If not, and its down to expected times of travel and current roadworks, but if I was driving from Scotland to Southampton I would consider an alternative to avoid the M6 as much as possible. South of Preston it can be a car park to the M42.
The alternative is to leave M6 at Penrith, A66 to A1 at Scotch Corner (50 miles, takes about an hour) then M1 to M42.

Hi, no, we're going as a convoy from the same town to the cruise. Thanks will check the route out.
We have never found the M6 to be a huge problem. Doesn't the alternative route suggested above add many miles? Are the OP and their friends seriously doing it in 1 day? We would have at least one overnight stop but then we have all the time in the world.

Hi yes, we are doing it in one day - always have, early start with stops every 3 hours. The overnight is at Southampton before the cruise.
It's just my experience having travelled between West Yorkshire and South Wales 5-6 times a year for 30 years. The difference in mileage between M1/M42 to M5 or M62/M6 to M5 is about 3 miles, but from experience the M1 is generally a clearer route. As I mentioned time of travel can be crucial.
I have also done West Yorkshire to Southampton for cruises 8-9 times and there are options from the M1 to get to the A34 using the M40. Leave at East Midlands for A42/M42, or M69 (always very quiet) and I have even done the A43 past Silverstone.
