We mostly use our WiFi/ 3G Kindles at home, so have been merrily downloading books and checking daily deals etc without thinking too much about it.

When away from home, I've often wondered why I can't do any of the above. I thought my device must be faulty or connection poor, so I've repeatedly rebooted it (without any difference).

Finally, I've asked Amazon for help, and was quite surprised to be told the following:

'I am sorry this was not Amazon choice, Mobile Network Operators (MNOs) are phasing out their 2G and 3G networks. Kindle devices that require cellular connectivity through 2G or 3G networks for internet connectivity will be unable to connect to the internet after these networks are discontinued.'

I'd not received any news about this. It's disappointing to find that downloading books whilst on the move is no longer an option.

And even more annoying is the fact that the new Kindle that was bought for me can only download books if you have WiFi. Useless on out of the way campsites.
Only answer seems to be to guess how much reading you will be doing for the next 6 weeks and download before you go.

AFAIK, one of the reasons to perform the emergency alert test using 4G network is to prepare for the 3G network to be switched off.

I was informed by EE that 3G is used for text/SMS messages, so when 4G in my area was down, I was still able to receive text/SMS messages. However, that was at least a year ago when the 4G where I live was down.

I don't what to do with 2/3G devices when the networks are switched off, sorry!

Tethering isn’t part of your plan, it just a way to piggy back onto another device that has a SIM and therefore it has access to the internet without Wi-Fi. It depends on the other device.
Sadly, 2G and 3G turning off will affect many people; some areas don’t even have 3G yet, I’m not sure what happens there.

As Fiona had already mentioned, the ability to set your phone up as a hotspot for tethering purposes is down to your phone, not your plan.

You can tether if you have sufficient data in your plan.

Don't know which operating system you have or your Samsung phone model, however, on my Samsung Galaxy S22+, this is how I can set up the phone as a mobile hotspot:

Settings > Connections > Mobile Hotspot and Tethering > Mobile Hotspot (or Bluetooth Tethering if it is available) > Select "On"

Oh the joys of Bluetooth & playing music off BBC Sounds through the car radio when I’m driving in an area with poor radio signal.
It’s usually pipe music because that doesn’t vary in volume - I was playing a CD of Carmina Burana years ago & turned up the volume as I couldn’t hear it, only to jump out of my seat (at a road junction) when the volume suddenly went up & deafened me.
