My husband and I have both been ill since 17 July with flu type symptoms which have mostly cleared but a cough that just won’t go away and ongoing fatigue. We have tested regularly for Covid and always tested negative but whatever it is we have is much much worse than when we had Covid last year.

Hopefully this is our bout of illness for this year and we won’t have anything else!

My cough continued several weeks after I tested negative again. A friend who had Covid (the one I caught it off) still has problems with fatigue several weeks after he’s been negative: he runs out of puff by the early evening.

We have felt rather smug as we hadn't had it so far. However, OH went to the hospital for a blood test a week ago (e has CLL and is also on dialysis) and has now tested positive. The hospital say that they currently have a "spike", although he wasn't warned and he said no-one, even staff, was wearing a mask.

I'm clear still, but testing regularly.

Smug look gone!

My free-issue LFTs are running out and I have already bought a pack of 25s in case I need to test myself.

I would only perform a LFT if I feel unwell nowadays, in case it is Covid, as I mix with people who are vulnerable.

I caught Covid in March 2022.

No issue with travelling to Europe for work by plane in July 2022 and October 2022 when I needed to test as requested by the sites that I was visiting.

My last Covid booster was in October 2022 before my work trip to Europe.

I normally have one bad cold a year, and am well-stocked up with cold remedies. I can't remember when I had flu last.

Need to find an alternative dry cough medicine as the trust one that I normally take for as long as I can remember has been withdrawn from market by the regulators for safety concerns.

I still maintain that I had Covid in November 2019. If not it was something with incredibly similar symptoms, and I was ill for over a month. My doctor just called it a viral infection as nobody had heard of Covid yet.

Flu I used to get with monotonous regularity until I started having flu-jabs. I have only really had colds since then until 2019.

If you find a good one please let me know! I used to take a cough medicine called Pulmo Bailly for years. It was the best ever and got rid of a dry tickly cough in 2 or 3 days. However, as it contained codeine, it was withdrawn from the market and I have not been able to find anything nearly as good since.

Pholcodine Linctus (with sugar, SF = ) was my go-to for dry cough, now withdrawn.

I bought a bottle of Covonia to try, as I don't have much Pholcodine Linctus left, and shall come back to report if it is any good.

I have heard good things about it many years ago.

We both used the Covonia throat spray in our recent Covid because we could barely swallow for 3 days. The local anaesthetic is very effective.
Let us know how the Covonia cough mixture is: I was brought up on Famel Syrup but it was banned too (medicinal creosote!!) Sadly some people become addicted to cough mixture with codeine as it’s an opioid, as is heroin. I can’t take my usual migraine tablets through Dubai, because they’ve got codeine.

We are lucky, we hardly ever become ill. The last time I was really under the weather was Christmas 2019 (still went away). It was a viral infection but nothing like COVID. I caught it in London, I attend a pensioners' lunch every year, kindly laid on by a company I worked for.
