I have already provisionally booked my stay for the New Year weekend for this year.

However, I am going to stay at the adult-only site at a pub that is famed for its ciders and perries instead (just came back from there and I stayed there last August).

It has good facilities for a pub site, and the staff and the regulars are very friendly.

Only managed to booked until 31 December 2023 as they have not enabled booking for 2024 yet.

The pitch that I had in mind is no longer available, so someone else has the same idea to stay there over the NY weekend!

They had to do a manual booking for my stay in late August/early September 2024 for their cider (and perry) festival!

Why plan? SOME, and I shall stress "some", events or popular campsites are booked up well in advance - sneeze and they are gone!

For next year, only the French site in May and a CAMC site in October to be booked, otherwise I am done.

Perhaps ad hoc trip(s0 to pub site that I really like for some of their events.

As a single person hike or cycle camping I never quite know where I'll be when I'm ready to camp. It's much the same when I'm driving a car across France.
I'll reach a town with a campsite, I may have checked it out online, there may be signs pointing to the campsite or I may see tents in the distance. I'll know that I don't want to push on to the next town, that's how I usually choose a campsite. If it's a good campsite I'll target it next time, if it's a particularly bad campsite I'll spend my evening planning how to improve things should I inherit it.
I'm a member of a men's hiking, cycling and camping group, to join an event you have to book online, to lead an event you have to plan ahead and create an online information and booking page. You can't just throw stuff in a bag and shoot off because the sun's shining.

Capt Lightning, It's Homefire Ovals I have, I still call it coal though and we're lucky to have a coal merchant who delivers tipped sacks based just down the road, always reduced prices in summer.
Devonatheart, we had walnut and ash trees felled in the garden now well seasoned, sliced to size buy the workmen, I just have to split them as and when required. The homes around us had their fireplaces removed and modern systems installed but I stood my ground so any scrap wood ends up here.

Home being just a tiny bungalow with a small kitchen and no room for a dining table, plus my aversion to the festive season, I have the perfect excuse not to entertain family.

Starcraft, get those rings split as soon as you can, the longer you leave these hardwoods, even Ash, they turn into VERY hard wood when seasoned. Much easier to do right away. 👍

With you on the Xmas aversion, we just don’t get sucked in by it all.

Do they charge you extra to cut a tree up into 'slices'? And, is the 'loss' of the tree taken into account when they fell it? As in, they would be logging and flogging it as a bonus to felling, surely?

I suppose they would under normal circumstances, but since I'd already requested they leave the wood for my fire, they were obliging. The Housing Association footed the bill.

Hello Mick, not sure what you mean by “is the loss of the tree taken into account when they fell it” Sorry if I am being a big thick.

When a tree is cut down, it is processed for fire wood, if it is a suitable type, by being cut into rings, then split if too big for the burner and seasoned for up to three years depending on what it is. Ash for instance can be burned “green” but better left for a year. Rings not “slices” 👍🔥
