My favourite quiz show tale recently was on "Tipping Point". A contestant (a schoolteacher) was asked - - " In his classic poem, Homer described nectar as the drink of the gods, what did he describe as their food?"
The answer he gave was "donuts", obviously thinking of Homer Simpson!

2."Where is the Dogger Bank?" I've heard of this on the shipping forecast; it must be at sea! I'll show that I know something - "It's off the mouth of The Wash, which is between the south coast of Wales and the north coast of Cornwall...."

erm wrong! the wash is on the lincolnshire/norfolk coast line, between boston and kingslynn

dogger bank os approx halfway across the north sea to denmark from newcastle

Yes; I know now (for many years) but back then, I thought this was something that I had got right, as opposed to all the other questions that I guessed - so I was trying to show off....
Ah well, that's life!

This one is a real cracker. I have just heard the following on another episode of "Tipping Point.
Question: In 1989, which U.S. President declared that the Cold War was over?
Contestant (another schoolteacher, who said as she did history at A-level had a feeling she knew the answer): "I am tossing up between J F Kennedy and Abraham Lincoln, I`ll go with J F Kennedy".
At that point my head was in my hands with despair.

There would be no point in me going on the Chase ,I have no interest in sport and dont believe anything on the political scene. My spare time is spent in my workshop doing repairs or designing and making furniture for folks. I could be wrong but this seems far more worthwhile to me to create something useful that can be enjoyed for many years, rather than to have a headful of pointless information.

People usually confuse Physical Geography with Human Geography.

People also usually mistake accurate recall for intelligence.

Long and the short of it, if you are the brightest mind on Earth and you never learn that penguins exist you can't answer any questions on them regardless of how crunchy and chocolatey they are.

Ref the earlier comment about TV shows dramatising real life recent murders I couldn't agree more, and its very concerning how close to the event these dramatisations are getting with scant regard for the impact this has on the affected.   Even made me wince when I found out the families on Gavin & Stacey are actually named after the Wests and the Shipmans.

As for TV nowadays becoming more and more inane, lets face it it always has been. It's a knockout? ....is just Hole In The Wall. Watch any of the old TV quiz shows on that channel (is it Quest, something like that???) and they are no better. Watch an old edition of Family Fortunes and they weren't exactly the Einstein Family vs the Hawking Family.

There was a period in the late 70s into the 80s when Saturday night telly was variety shows from the seaside with a bloke playing an easy listening piano medley on the beach surrounded by girls in bikinis.

They have been showing old totp episodes on BBC4, there was one the other day that had one of legs and co doing a dance, also Imagination doing a track, and Alvin Stardust, and Simon Bates with his hands all over the girls in the crowd - it was truly, truly awful. The only possible enjoyment out of that for me is how nostalgic that rubbish is.

If you want a good quiz show, House of Games is entertaining for the family, mastermind and university challenge are still on, and Only Connect more than supports the challenging end of the debate.

As for me, the only thing I watch every week is Saturday Kitchen, which is my chance to sit down and zone out.

You forgot to mention the latest 'enhancement' many have adopted. The 'Marge Simpson' lips. Who in gods name thinks these are a good look to anyone who isnt a cartoon character with a blue Beehive hairstyle? I find myself staring at the more outlandish people with them. They are grotesque. They appear to be taken up by exclusively white people, attempting to look like Black girls, who's lip shape are still nothing like these exploded fake versions. And i say white 'people' - because ive seen more than a couple of blokes with them around London.

On the intelligence/interlect thing; we watched the 'Inheritence' drama the other night. Which culminated with the most improbable 'end' scenario outside an episode of Scooby Doo. With characters 'solving' at least 2 murders by themselves. Ridiculous isnt the word. Main characters having then been dragged out of a burning house, stood watching in a daze, whilst the 'perp' is led away and thrown in a police car to one side. With NO fire engines in attendance whatsoever. If this passes for credible drama viewing nowadays, i will stick to 'Air Ambulance' and Disaster' documentarys.

Exactly! I was brought up to know all about UK locations. Some of the answers are terrible.

Depends a lot on where you live and how much you've travelled. Bear in mind this is a camping forum, most people here are going to know the UK because of that. Londoners brought up without cars won't really know anywhere. Even here in the Midlands there's areas of the country that I just don't know simply because the M1 or M5 goes straight past on the way somewhere to the sea

Not wanting to turn this into “room 101”, but keeping on the subject of tv programs, I find it deeply disturbing that real murders of real women are dramatised into tv shows for entertainment. I refuse to watch. A one off, maybe, but they’re now almost monthly. It’s salacious, it’s feels wrong that companies make money out of relatively recent tragic events, and I worry about the people who enjoy watching. Sorry if I’ve offended anyone here who does, but it’s not the same as a fictitious Inspector Morse or Miss Marple or Agatha Christie.

I agree, but it isn’t just women Fiona. 👍

If you are more choosy about the media fodder you choose then I suspect you wouldn't have this point of view. There's plenty of good, intelligent, stuff out there, and plenty of good, intelligent people. You just have to choose to watch it.

The pouty lips, botox, etc is just junk media, cheap to make and entertaining for those that choose to while away their lives watching it. You aren't going to see good quizzers on tipping point, lets be honest, it's just entertainment - watch an old episode of Bullseye, or Strike It Lucky, the questions are no more difficult.

I can only speak from my experience, obviously, but our daughter and her friends - teenagers - have heroes that are gymnasts, athletes, musicians, artists, dancers, even scientists.   As they have grown up in this world of media everywhere they have learnt to be cynical and very selective about what they believe. I think this is one of the reasons engagement in politics by young people is so poor, sadly, as they don't believe the spin many of the older generation fell for.

We live in a world where, unless you need it, it's simply not necessary or useful to know where Wrexham is or how many fathhoms are in a league (about 3030) when that information is available - up to date - at the swipe of a finger. These things aren't a test of intelligence anyway, they are a test of recall.

I would rather our children's education was spent learning how to unravel the mess their preceding generations - including ours - have got the planet into.

Who is going to put the information onto the internet for the lazy then to swipe?
