A friend has to do a speed awareness course on line. He is totally confused by anything to do with IT so I said he could come here and use my laptop to do it.
He has an e mail (which he has forwarded to me) with a link to click to access the session. BUT the instructions say he has to download the Microsoft Teams app and gives different instructions for each type of device eg phone, tablet or desktop.
I tried to download the Microsoft Teams from the Microsoft website on my laptop but it asks me for my Microsoft log in and password but I don't have either and don't want anything registered in my name as it needs to be his name and e mail of course.
My daughter said he should just be able to click on the link in the e mail and it will take him to the session and to follow the instructions from there.
I don't want any problems on the day as we will both get very fraught.
My question is does anyone know if clicking on the link in e mail is enough or is it essential to download and register an account with TEAMS or will the link take him there anyway.
The link will take him to the browser version of teams. If he clicks the link it will take him to that.
All you need to join a Teams meeting is a link. Select Click here to join the meeting in your meeting invite to be taken to a page where you can choose to either join on the web or download the desktop app. If you already have the Teams app, the meeting will open there automatically.

From memory, you can remain as a “guest” on screen, but the meeting host will say what’s required. I much prefer Zoom, the online lectures & talks that I attend are on Zoom but Councils, schools etc say it’s not secure. They use Teams: in comparison to Zoom, I find it clunky & not intuitive.
Just give yourself plenty of time - start half an hour ahead: better to be sitting looking at a waiting message on screen than rushing to make it work properly & arriving late.
Thank you so much Fiona and Ewen. I will get him to arrive here at least an hour beforehand so we can have a coffee and set up about half an hour ahead.
I just don't want anything to go wrong for him as he is nervous enough doing the course as well as having to use a laptop.
Also I offered to help and I want to let him feel that I know what I am doing as it gives him confidence not being alone. I will set him up in another room so he is alone, but be on hand if anything goes wrong.
Zoom is fine but this is another different platform.
We moved from zoom to teams at work. We also have our phones through teams. It is an easy platform to use for meetings, calls, chat and video. The only issue is if you are used to a different platform, there is always a bit of a learning curve.
