Any recommendations? Have looked at the comparison site, Usay Compare who seem to be able to find a good price. Do not want to be pushed into anything.
I would check a couple more comparison sites rather than relying on just the one - we use Consumers Association (Which?). MSE might be useful too (money saving expert).
I paid privately for a scan that my NHS would not do, and the hospital has since changed from BUPA (efficient) to another that is less efficient. But your medical history may fit a particular insurance company more than it would suit me.
We have been with Benenden Health for years as I was offered it through work ( civil service). They now offer it to all.
They don't do orthopaedic but offer discounts on that work.
My wife has used it twice .
She actually went to the hospital at Benenden for surgery. It is a very good hospital. She was a senior nurse and was very impressed with the service.
The operations she had were covered after seeing their consultants quite quickly after referral.
She also had some physio locally after a back injury, also provided by them.

I was talking to a consultant many years ago and asked him if it would be worth having private health insurance.
He suggested an alternative. Find out what it would cost me and then pay into a savings account instead. Should I need private medicine, then I would have money to pay the bill. If I did not need treatment, then I still had the money.
Not the answer for everyone, of course, but certainly food for thought.

We used to subscribe to HSA (now Simply Heath) as we got good rates from work. It doesn't cover major surgery or anything like that but it would contribute to dental care, glasses, stays in hospital and some of the cost of a private consultation. What we found was that as prices went up we were paying far more than we got out and decided to put money aside each month into a savings account and we dip into that when there is a need. Not sure what sort of cover Mrs Bounce is looking for but I assume a bit more comprehensive than that?

So the same as what people suggest re vets and pets.
Sorry but you're never going to have enough.

Don't understand the above either. Most folk can't manage to save more than £300 per month as an example. £3,600 per year is nowhere near enough for specialist cancer treatment.

I think the idea is that you save what you can in a long term account with the best interest rate you can find. £100 a month for 5 years = £6k + interest. Not enough for major surgery, but it would save you waiting a year for a hernia op.
