Insurers seem to have some kind of strange logic that defies normal common sense Mick. Seems crazy to me that TPFT should actually be dearer, but it is what I heard from at least one of the comparison sites, and I'm sure I've also heard Martin Lewis say it on one of his programmes. Worth checking out though in my opinion.
TPFT is all I ever had on my cars when I was a teenager and it was always cheaper then. That is a very long time ago though and I suppose things change. My first two cars each cost me £50 when I bought them, and even back then it was hardly worth insuring them except to comply with the law.

If you don't care about your car then you get TPFT
From the insurers perspective.
If they don't care enough to insure their own car then they won't respect other peoples cars or property and are a high risk.
Probably
Aye, but as said; if your car is low-value, because thats all you can afford. Coupled with even one 'claim' hammering your premiums, why would you deem to 'care' whether you could claim for it? Only an idiot wants an accident. Its very cynical on the insurers parts.
And as for the comparison sites; i used one of these for the very first time this last week. I wont be using them again. I had already got what i thought was a 'dear' quote for our trucks renewal direct from an insurers. The comparison sites added another £350 as a minimum. All they showed was quotes from who they have on their panel. Not necessarily competitive at all.
If you have TPFT and were involved in an accident you should always tell your insurance company even if you don't intend to make a claim.
I always check several comparison sites and normally get a better price which I use to haggle with my current insurer, if they won't budge I go with the best comparison site offer.

Every year I check at least 3 different comparison sites and a few other insurers that don't use the comparison sites. This year I went with NFU, who gave me the best deal and they aren't on any comparison sites. They weren't quite the cheapest, but they were certainly the best value for money and way cheaper than my renewal quote.

It has different ways of getting cheaper insurance
Follow the steps in the order listed I managed to get my sons down from £2500 to £1800 for a Santa fe 4X4 as a new driver and a experienced driver as a named 2nd driver.
Above all do not buy of Facebook or any other SM sites
