In 2023, Android is by far the dominant smartphone platform, with 70.8% market share globally against Apple's 28.4% so clearly the world view is not that Apple is superior? I think there are some fields where Apple might be the preferred system especially in web design and art. (David Hockney creates a lot of his pictures on an iPad. However back to the original question, the OP's son wants a tablet to use in the kitchen and I can't see many applications that would require top end equipment. Most screens are now high definition so probably the cheapest tablet would do.

I have a Samsung galaxy S6 lite it's great but I would have an S8 if I was getting one now. Not sure how you are all having slow loading issues with a Samsung tablet- user interface error I suspect.
For away in the caravan watching film I have an asus F17 laptop with a 17inch screen. It's fantastic

John Lewis is alright to purchase from but it's 3rd party support from the lowest bidder. Direct from Samsung looks the best option at the moment.
Go on Youtube and watch a few comparison videos to help make your choice, I did this with the latest phone purchase as a gift for my husband he was very pleased with the selection.
