We got our annual water bill yesterday. They (Anglia Water) tell us that we have used 6% less water than in the previous year, but they are putting up our monthly payments by 27%!
Something doesn't compute.

It certainly doesn't make sense but in this instance I would write a letter of complaint to your local MP as I believe there is an investigation being implemented in parliament as to why huge salaries and bonuses have been gained by top officials with a lack of investment over the last few years. It's unfair that customers paying for supreme water quality should be expected to compensate water companies for their lack of investment but that's exactly what your MP is there for which you should receive a reply in due course in response to your complaint.
My brother got his water bill yesterday. Normally £100+ (he lives on his own) he was shocked to get a bill for £500+. A quick phone call and a comment about his age and they agreed to put a hold on the bill and send someone to check asap.
Please be reasonable, they have juicy dividends to pay their share holders, and let’s have a bit of empathy for the fat cat CEOs and Directors…….They need their bonuses you know! 🤷
Water is included in with our Council tax in Scotland (fresh c£300 pa and waste disposal c£380 pa paid over 10 months). Getting a meter would make no difference to us at all.
We have a water meter, no choice as the houses here were all fitted with them when they we built in 1992. Our bills aren't too bad at all at the moment, but I keep hearing rumours that they are likely to go up significantly to pay for "improvements". Nothing confirmed though.
I don't think the water companies should be allowed to put up prices by more than inflation though. Shareholders and fat-cats should be made to pay for the mess they have created, as it's not like we have any choice who we get our water from. I thought privatisation was supposed to be about competition!
Here in the Portsmouth area we have one supplier reasonably priced but southern water charge for taking the sewage and rain water away they leave leaks to go unrepairable for months and when we have a down pour they let untreated sewage out into Langstone harbour which they have been fined thousands for and who pays for this not the fat share holders oh no but us the customers sorry rant over
