Returned home from the Lake District last Tuesday, I'd enjoyed my stay so much I considered extending it a few more days, but the impending storms put me off and decided heading for home was wise! It wasn't being on site in the storms that concerned me so much, even though a woodland site with trees all around caravan, it was the long journey home that motivated me ..... well, the actual journey home CONVINCED me it was a good choice!
Without doubt, before the real storms had even hit, the most persistent windiest conditions I've towed in, a good 200 miles of near 300 mile journey were rather rough! A lot of my journey was on exposed sections of road where not a lot stops the wind! My outfit is very stable and never given serious cause for concern over many thousands of miles towing, but fact is, it's a large caravan with a large 'sail' area and strong winds do affect it. I could feel the cross winds buffeting, and erred on the side of caution and kept speed down, and not much above 50mph. I was watching the high sided HGVs being buffeted and 'leaning' in the gusts, and a few took 'meandering' paths, so convincing evidence I wasn't imagining anything! It was an uneventful journey in the end, and thanks to some 'sensible' speed choices, relatively relaxed, but I suspect had I cruised at my more normal 60mph, it'd have been a tad less relaxed and more nerve rackingly lively!
Rather glad I didn't have to do it in the more severe storm conditions, was coming down the A1 not too far from the Leeds Festival!
