TBH never found a totally reliable source of info for well advanced planning of routes! Been well stitched up by Highways Agency (in various 'AKA's over the years) web site on 'future' events! They are horribly inaccurate! - and they provide the info to nearly every other end user source!
Biggest one was on one of my dog rescue transport runs a few years back, where we do a relay system of handing the dog on to next transporter to do a leg of a long journey. A14 just outside Cambridge was scheduled (by HA!) to close from 9pm overnight, which didn't impact our plans, but contractors shut it down around 2pm! Total chaos ensued, every road and lane for miles around became gridlocked! People I was supposed to meet were well and truly stuck, and both our sat navs were telling us something like 5 hour delay before we could meet at any alternative rendezvous point! Transport plan had to be abandoned, dog came home with me for the night, and an alternative transport plan improvised for next day! We're damned good at these transport runs normally, and cope with hiccups along the way, but this one broke us thanks to unreliable info from the OFFICIAL SOURCE!
As good as I ever seem to be able to 'crystal ball' gaze on journeys is to check current traffic just before setting off, and plan around that! Mostly works, but had plenty of journeys double in time because of changing circumstances and unscheduled events! Not a lot of joy in driving these days!
