We enjoy the Christmas market in Edinburgh. Plenty of genuine bratwurst stalls. Classy gifts & decorations. A ferris wheel which gives fabulous views of the city at sunset. Oh, and maybe Six Nations rugby in the afternoon. It’s the only time we’ll stay at Mortonhall, get the bus into the city - the site is too busy for us in the summer. Other cities have Christmas markets that sound very good too - any suggestions?

Just back from Bergen. The Christmas market there is something different.
There was a Ferris wheel and a 'merry go round', but instead of little stalls all selling tourist 'tat', the stalls were in large temporary sheds.

Mostly high end goods at high end prices - fancy knitted jumpers, reindeer pelts, artisan cheeses and bread etc.. You really needed deep pockets to shop there.

The local shops were much the same when it came to high prices, but oddly enough, our centrally placed , 4 star hotel, was cheaper than in the UK. Public transport wasn't too expensive either.

The hotel was very good, but the breakfast was excellent - freshly baked rolls, smoked salmon, Gravadlax, pickled herring etc..    or you could have bacon and egg.

Not really a Christmas Market sort of person. I hate crowds and crowded places, and I'm the sort that only buys what I set out to get, so they don't appeal at all. I don't do "browsing to see what there is". If I want something in particular I will go out and see if I can find it, buy it, then I'll go home.

I'd much rather go out with family and/or friends for a meal or just a drink in somewhere quiet and secluded, and preferably at this time of year a nice log fire to sit round.

Colin

Never been to a Christmas Market, they don't appeal at all. Give me a town with some decent charity or antique shops. Have a good collection of Mdina glass from both.

LOL Colin, we are of singular thought!

Shops and markets are places to go and BUY what you NEED, then leave, NOT places of entertainment to be browsed at leisure just for the sake of it! Can't stand all the hustle and bustle, I'll suffer 'people' JUST long enough to BUY what I went for, then I have malicious thoughts towards them for getting in way of my quickest exit!

Many a girlfriend/partner over the years has torn me off a strip because I don't share their OBSCESSION with looking at and even worse HANDLING almost every item that they can get near! - FFS! - WHY! They have no real interest or intent to buy, but just can't resist looking at and touching EVERYTHING! It's a form of female insanity in my book!

As far as a XMAS market goes, that's just a combination of two of my greatest hates! NO, NO, THRICE NO!

Bah Humbug.

I mentioned we had a couple of nights in Spain booked. It was last weekend in Malaga and we didn't know when we booked that it was a bank holiday weekend.

The Christmas lights were amazing, they had a few stalls in the city centre, but the highlight was the artisan food market which ran for about half a mile along the harbour front.

Dozens of stalls selling all types of food and drink which is all manufactured in the Malaga region. There was no need to eat tapas, stroll and graze and drink your way through the stalls was the order of the day. Brilliant, as was seeing the sun and a pleasant 22 degrees. Far more pleasant than the tat stalls our markets consist of.

Absolutely! I couldn't agree more! That sums me up precisely.

I totally agree with the post above
We aren't away for Xmas, but did go,away when we were working. Usually alternate years, often a cruise. Now retired we will look for a cruise to warmer regions in late January or early February.
Then get the van out again in March.
For 2026 we areclooking at a long cruise to parts of South America. Not getting any younger so do it while we can.

I have to agree with the thought that we're not getting younger, so we should do it while we can. We've got some ideas, but 2026? - we haven't even got to 2025. A trip up the Duoro valley to sample to food and wine has been on our list for several years, so maybe next year.

I do quite like Christmas markets, though they vary enormously. Hamburg has been my favourite so far.
