There are a few people that tow on the Kia Owners Club Forum. I have a Kia Niro HEV and I think it has a fairly low towing weight of around 1300kgs. The PHEV would probably be a better tow car?
We have a 2023 Hyundai Tucson HEV. It replaced a Santa Fe diesel. It shares its platform and running gear with the Kia.
It towed our Bailey Unicorn Cadiz ( max weight 1485 kg) very well, including a trip,to France this June.
We now have a Bailey Phoenix GT 75 460,whose max weight is 100kg less than the Cadiz. One towing outing with it so far- even better!
It doesn't have as much torque as a diesel but has 230hp but still tows well. Its also very stable.
Mpg solo is excellent we have seen indicated 59mpg pootling around. Towing between 20 and 24 mpg, not too much less than the diesel.
It is extremely rapid if you want it to be, especially in Sport mode.
HEV and PHEV are all automatic. It does seem to hold the gears a bit at times but you can manually change with the paddles.
Max tow weight for ours is 1650kg, plug in version is lower.
The current facelifted version has a lower towing limit for some reason and slightly less bhp.

Hi i have looked at the sportage to tow our van 1400 Kgs and can only use the 1.6 mild hybrid 48v version with 1650 Kgs towing capacity, all others are significantly reduced, however boot is small.
The Tuscons new face lift versions are more or less 1500 Kgs, i like to have a bit in reserve.
the new VW tiguan 1.5 versions appear to tow about 1800 Kgs, but its a 1.5 !
Now looking at the plug in hybrid ford New Kuga 2.5 PHEV which can tow 2100 Kgs,
Not much really on offer for caravanners unless you go a year or two older. give me a good old >2.0 ltr diesel anyday.

That's why I got one of the last 2.0 ecoblue kuga 190ps auto. Awesome tow car and will see out rest of my days

Now 52 years Caravanning completed.
According to VW uk website new Tiguan is available with good old 2.0 litre diesel 150ps.
Several Skoda models are available new with 2.0 litre diesels. Also Audi as well. Still plenty of choice if you want a new 2.0 litre diesel tow car.
Its only Ford & the far east makes that have abandoned diesels. Which tbf were only a thing in Europe. Other markets in the world with fuel taxed at much less see diesel as only for trucks.
A friend went from diesel Audi to Kuga PHEV. It was a nightmare. Several times it would not start. The starter battery was flat despite traction batteries being fully charged. Ford dealer faffed about with it several times. It still let him down. Finally they fitted a new starter battery under warranty.
After about 9 months he traded it in for another diesel Audi.
You can get a diesel Sorento but they are over £40K or a Land Cruiser for even more!
Land Rover do diesels but they too are expensive and don't have greatest reliability record.
For a big twin axle caravan it might be pickups are a less expensive option.
I like the Ford Ranger and Toyota Hilux crewcabs.
Skoda Kodiak is nice.

I tow with a new Volvo xc60 and it’s phenomenal in every way, bags of power great spec massive towing capacity and 50 miles from a charge, I think it’s also 350bhp so it’s very fast as well.
It’s just won the caravan tow car of the year ( not that I ever follow that)
Kia Sorento 2.2 diesel automatic (2024) for us, traded in our 2018 model earlier this year.
Fantastic for towing and general driving, especially longer distances.
Over 60mpg on a run, 30+ mpg towing our 1500kg van - even better than the 2018 Sorento.
The 7 year warranty is also a big plus.
Our caravan is 1600kg, it's pretty hard trying to find a decent tow car, currently tow with a 2017 ford edge which does the job really well, am looking to get a new car in the next six months but there seems to be a massive lack of availability of decent cars that have a kerb weight of 1850+ Kgs.
Looked at a couple of MHEVs but not sure how decent they will be towing 1600kg with a 1.5 3 cylinder petrol engine, I fear it will get worse as 2030 approaches
It can only get better. As stated earlier plenty of 2litre diesel choice right now & a gigafactory in Sweden is going the same way as BritishVolt & about to go bust due to cancelled orders from European car manufacturers. Neither Swedish or German governments are willing to use their taxpayers money to prop it up. The EV dream appears over & the future of the ICE looks rosy.
The manufacturers have delivered the EVs but governments all over Europe have failed to provide sufficient charging infrastructure or grid capacity to supply those chargers.
In other news caravanning appears to be dying along with its mostly pensioner fanbase with & production of motorhomes is far exceeding caravans now so we can see the direction of travel but imo suitable diesel tow cars will be available at least until we all get too enfeebled to drive.
