Probably because it's a better road for towing. Have a look on Google Earth 'Street View' and compare the two roads which then may give you a better idea as to why the AA Route Planner chose the A605.
Thanks, will do, but the A605 seems to be a smaller road and brings you to the wrong side of Peterborough. A47 has stretches of dual carriageway. It does the same this end; to get to the A1 it says to go through much of Luton. We take the B road from Barton le Clay to Hitchin. So much easier...

If the B road from Barton le Clay to Hitchin is much easier then just use that route and ignore the AA Route Planner altogether. Quite often a route planner will provide the quickest route but it's not always the best choice so just stick with what you think is best.
