Now, before anyone points out the obvious I'll start by saying our budget is only £2.5k max. We've looked at a good few TDDi's now, & we've seen some rubbish. We initially discounted TDCi's because at our price point they are coming with big mileages. Speaking to, what seemed to be, a very knowledgeable dealer today he thinks we should be looking at a 2.0L petrol model. He said that for our money we would get a really good car, with none of the expensive faults that plague the diesel models; & that the 146bhp 2.0 petrol would be fine for towing.
Has anyone experience of a 2.0L Mk3 Mondeo as a tow car ?
Caravan is 1500kg MTPLM, with what we take away we'd be at about 87-90% match, this doesn't worry me.
Advice please people...
I'm trying to convince the wife that we should get a Sorrento, but running the Mondeo as a second car / tow car meant we could keep the Toyota Verso that we love.
(But thanks to Toyota's stupid low towing limits wont legally pull a xmas cracker)

I had a similar budget 3 years ago & opted for a petrol over the diesel.

Depends on your mileage, Diesel's are cheaper to tax as well.

approx £140 for a diesel £220 for a petrol?

My sister has the TDCi and shes has a few issues with it, Cutting out & not restarting, Been towed into ford twice.
£1200 clutch & starter motor replacement.

Personally i would think twice about a 1500kg caravan & the mondeo, You will be so close to the 100% match.

My 2L petrol tow's my grampian which is only 1200kg & 23ft long with no problem and will easily exceed the speed limit. Sometimes you will need to drop a gear to keep the revs up though which the diesel wont need to.

The TDDi is a good car and at your budget a much better car than the TDCi (2003-2005)which can be very expensive when the fly-wheel falls apart.

There are plenty of Mondeo about in your price range it's just finding the right lowish mileage one The Mk V Mondeo goes back as far as X reg I think So there will be something out there too suit your budget
I have had 2 TDCi's still got the estate and that pulled our Coachman Amara 520/4 at about 87% no problems Both were 04 reg and only problem I had was on the Hatchback it broke a spring on the front so I replaced both at the same time cost £150

1500kg is the maximum towing weight for the mondeo ,Petrol might struggle a bit on the hills .And before any jumps on and says it will tow it fine I have a Mk 2 Zetec 2.0lt petrol towing a 16ft lunar Clubman fantastic on the flat but I do have to use the gear box more on hills and rev the engine to keep road speed up , Mpg can be as low as 20 to the gallon but the car only cost me £1750 3 and half years ago and has been ultra reliable .

I would plump for the diesel if towing the heavy van, it will be much better on the hills, why not look at some high milers with full history? my Volvo is now 110,000m it drives the same now as new (I've had it from new, 55plate) it spends most of its life sitting on a motorway in 6th gear, if anything is wrong it gets replaced as it doesn't cost me (its a company lease car) its due for change, it will just be sent to auction then end up on a forecourt somewhere.

A colleague bought his mondeo diesel a while ago from the lease company for his dad, it now has 175,000 on the clock!!

Just a thought

The petrol mondeos are lighter than the diesels. Estates are heavier. I would be very wary towing 1500kg MTPLM with a Mondeo.

My 406 hdi Diesel is on 112000 miles and still like new so high milage wouldn't bother me. I'd go for newer with more miles with a service history.

Alternatively the Vauxhall Omega. Shame they dropped the Granada/Scorpio. There aren't many bigger cars without going to the Mercs etc.

My manual states max tow weight 1800kg, But the kerbweight will be closer to 1500kg.

The MK3 has an extra 10-15bhp compared to the MK2.
But i agree about changing down to keep the speed up on the hills you wont need to do that as much with the diesel.

Hi all. We bought a 52' plate Ghia TDCi 130. It has high mileage, 140k, but it's had one owner, has a full service history & is in good condition. It cost us £1800. It drives lovely, is smooth & has loads of power; certainly doesnt feel like a 140k mile car of old. It should be ok as a tow-car until we change the Verso for a CRV. I really really want a Sorrento but the wife says they are big & ugly...

I've ordered a tow-bar for it so will be fitting that on Friday, oh & it needs a rear wheel bearing but these are a 15min job to replace, & parts for Fords are very cheap.

We got fed up with looking at cars in the end. There is some absolute rubbish out there, loads of ex-minicabs. We finally spoke to a really nice chap who is a buyer for a big chain of dealers. He gave us some really good advice & we feel that for £1800 it's not the end of the world if it does need some bits replacing. Its a Ghia model so is very plush inside.

As for the towing, I appreciate that we could be at about 93% if we fully load the caravan, but I estimate that we'll be running at about 1425kg so just over 89%. Car is listed as 1584kg, I'll pop it onto the works weighbridge later in the week to confirm. Actual running weights likely to give about 75% match. Have heard some good reports about the Mondeo 130 TDCi as a tow car so looking forward to trying it out.

Cheers.

I've been towing a bailey discovery 200 with a ford mondeo MK3 TDCI and has been a joy to tow. The Diesel mondeo has lots of torque. Recently, whenever I try to accelerate the "coil light" comes on and the car goes into limp mode with over 50% loss of power. This makes the mondeo TDCI utterly useless/unreliable as a tow car.
It appears to be common problem and I've suffered it for over a year. Numerous visits to the garage have been unable to fix the problem. I was thinking of changing the car for a newer diesel model but all newer diesels have a particulate filter fitted which can cause problems along with all the other problems diesels suffer from. in fact on the AA website they advise :-
If you're buying a new car and plan to use it mainly for town-based, stop/start driving it would be wise to avoid a diesel car fitted with a Diesel Particulate Filter (DPF) because of the possible hassle of incomplete 'DPF regeneration'.
I'm considering purchasing a PETROL Mondeo to avoid all the problems/costs associated with Diesel cars.

Get a Volvo....

Even high milers - and I mean really HIGH milers are still tight as a drum.

My old S80 was just the basic model but felt like a limo.

It may have been a 2.4, but with it being a D5, it gave really good MPG even for being a heavy car, which then helps with the towing side of things.

I said it a while ago here somewhere, I hated our Mondeo and wished I kept the Volvo.

And for £2.5K budget, I think you'll find a cracker....

You need to find a better garage. The flashing glowplug light is a turbo or fuelling issue.

Not difficult to fix if they are not lazy and diagnose it properly.

Get yourself a code reader and read the fault codes.

Since my post above i bought a 2004 diesel and its been great. I had the flashing light. Sticky turbo vanes. easily and fairly cheaply sorted.

I had a turbo pipe pop off due to a dodgy clip and still managed to tow my van up and down the A30 in Cornwall.

Provided its looked after high milage in a diesel is nothing to worry about, most diesels will do 300k easy.and much better for towing than petrol

I am with GCMS on this one,on my third volvo, last s60 d5 was on 156k,only changed it because it was wrote off 3 weeks ago,now have another s60 d5,only done 127k !,fantastic tow cars, what i would do is try to find a mondeo,or any other diesel that has already had its clutch and flywheel replaced.

To a 'solid' flywheel / clutch too Steve?? Not another dual mass 'fly apart' wheel!

I got rid of our Mondeo before the dreaded turbo / injector / fuel pump / bottom pulley problems too, (or just call them mega bucks time).
