hi all

we are giving up the camping with tents and decided to go for a caravan.so taking the plunge early next year.we have a 59 plate focus 1.8 tdci style estate and going for the bailey pageant champange around the 04/05 year. any feedback please before we buy.

i have towed camping trailers daxaras etc but nothing quite as big as a caravan so do you think i need to go on a caravan handling course? if so can you recommend somewhere i can do this. (we live in leicester)

any guidance would be helpfull.

cheers

Can't speak for your car/van match. Apart from checking weight match it's really down to what you like. As for a towing course - it depends really on your confidence. I have never been on one and I am very confident I can do the job. If I went on one I guess I probably learn something.

I also use a small trailer. I find reversing the caravan easier but much better with a "spotter"

Both clubs do them and these would be the best source for training if you decide to.

Your Focus has a kerbweight of 1426kg and 85% would be around 1212kg .
The Pageant Champagne's MPTLM is 1335kg on the 2005 model so that works out at 94% match and for someone new to towing it is recommended not to tow above 85% of the cars kerbweight

I did the C&CC manoeuvring course before we got our van and it really helped. The first time I brought the van home I started to reverse it onto the drive and it wasn't going right, I stopped and went through in my mind the things I'd been taught and viola! straight on!!

We did the CC course - Practical Caravanning I think it was called, 1 and a half days. Absolutely spot on, best £94 I've ever spent. Don't leap down my throat, but it staggers me that people tow without doing a course. We learnt all sorts of useful things like correct outfit matching, loading your van, fire safety. how to stop your van being nicked, defensive driving, what to do if your van starts to snake, how to gas up with van attached, etc etc. Highly recommended.

I would urge everyone to do one of these courses.   It's not so much the physical towing and manoeuvring of a large outfit that you learn, but also the importance of correct loading and maximum weights (I speak as someone who has an HGV licence so driving something big isn't a big concern). It staggers me how many people are going around with dangerously loaded caravans and don't realise it.

I did the CC day and a half course and it was brilliant.

Further to my previous post, if, as suggested by others, you would like to take the Camping and Caravanning Club's Manouevring Course, these are scheduled for 27/28 February and 27/28 March (in Coventry). As chilephilly says, cost is about £95 plus membership fee if you're not aleady a member.
If you need to upgrade your licence C&CC also offer B+E Courses.
Details available on Camping and Caravanning Club website.

Hi

Do the course!

If you're in the C.C. you'll get a discount on your caravan insurance.

It pays for itself over a period of time and you'll end up a better tugger and better off too.

Hi all
thanks for all the responses and I will go for the course
next year.
I'm a confussed about weights etc so your all right it will help in future.
Also this one is for neil
my car is a company car at the mo its a 58 focus 1.8 tdci 5door hatch.
And they were giving me next week the 59 Plate estate tdci but found out that it's going to be 1.6 so said I'll keep the 1.8. So will this match the bailey pageant champagne but 2004 model as I have been informed that this is lighter due to the size in width. So I'm confussed as one company in the Suffolk area said it was a correct match.
So please help me out, is this correct.
Cheers dave

If you can manouver a small trailer then a caravan is a breeze. Smaller trailers are much harder to reverse than larger ones. You may need to take a test though, depending on the weight of the outfit and when you passed your test.

You really need to do your own outfit matching to be sure.

MTPLM of caravan must not exceed kerbweight of car and really should be no more than 85% of kerbweight of car for inexperienced towers.

MTPLM of caravan must not be more than Max Tow Braked Trailer for car.

Check you cars handbook for kerbweight for your particular engine size, model etc.

Check your cars handbook for Max Tow Braked Trailer. Check if there is a requirement for it to be within the Gross Train Weight of the car.

Gross Train Weight of the car is the weight of the fully loaded car and caravan.

Personally I wouldn't be happy towing a Pageant Champagne with a Focus, it's too near the limit for me.

hi

the caravan dealer said this is a good match?

this is thier info

car- kerb=1362kg, nose =75kg, max tow=1300kg, unbraked max tow=681kg, gross=1795kg, train=3095.

caravan- bailey pageant champange 2004 4 berth.    user payload=207kg, est.nose=91, mro/unladen=1095kg, mtplm/maw=1302.

so you have got me worried now.

95.6 % towing match it equates to and as your new to towing it is good advice have a van that weighs 85% of your cars kerbweight . As the above post says your very close to the limit as your car is limited to 1300kg and your van is
1302 mptlm . In an ideal situation your towing vehicle will have a greater towing limit than the MPTLM (max loaded weight )of your caravan . Dealers are known to be economical with the truth when matching towing cars to caravans to get a sale
