ihave heard some good things and bad stories, thinking around 2000 to 2002 year, all ihave been told so far is to buy only with the b.m.w. engine 2000.cc for towing and ecconomy, but i would heed any other advice on what to look for when buying one of these
Hi trailflash. You'll find plenty of arguments about freelanders on here.If you type freelanders into the search the forums facility on here you,ll get plenty of bedtime reading!

Tread very carefully if you are planning to buy a Freelander.
You'll probably get better advice / pick up more information on some of the Land Rover forums.

Hi I owned a Freelander 2Ltr, had a few problems mainly an electrical one, wasn't safe to drive in the end,I was not prepared to spend the money on having the dash taken out, it was going to cost more than the car was worth, had to go,but others have had no problems at all, great to drive, really solid towing. I loved the car. If it didn't have this problem would still have it.
Its difficult to give advice about buying an 8-10yr old car. If you do some googling you will find loads of info on Freelander engine probs on cars this age. If the car has documented evidence that extensive work(ie head gasket probs etc)has been carried out then possibly it could be worth buying.
Do you really need a 4x4 to tow your caravan? for the same money a 2wd car might be a better bet.
I now have an 03 freelander 2.0 Diesel BMW engine and have to say it is a fantastic tow car for my Bailey Pageant, stear clear of early petrol models, the head gasket always goes we had one and it did twice!!! but this one we have had for 1year now and its been a dream, nice and stable good torque, and hasnt let us down *yet* ive always had Disco's as i towed horses and swore id never have a Freelander, but i find the Hippo (freelander) a good towing car for the van and also as a general usuage vehicle, and its been a god send in the bad snow we have had.
If you do buy one though shop around there are plenty about take your time.I know some people love em some people hate em i really like mine.
We initially looked at one for towing, but I felt it was a bit short wheelbase and might not be as stable as I'd like. I think the towing weight was low too (?), but I'd check with the Land Rover site I think.
Bear in mind that a horsebox is a lot shorter than a caravan and might exert less leverage, especially a short, twin axle horsebox.

I wouldnt tow two horses with it ive towed one horse, two horses come in at over two tonnes and move about and you can feel them behind you in most towing vehicles.I cannot fault it for towing my van though,Im happy with my Hippo but i suppose in any make of car there is always going to be a few lemons,go on to the landyzone as suggested im a member there and they are really helpful
here is a Hippo (freelander) weight guide this may help
We have a 2001 freelander 3 dr and it comes in at about 1710kgs kerbweight which will handle most caravans including our twin axle. The 2 ltr diesel tows and pulls well (sometimes too well) and is very acceptable for the job - That said ours cost us a small fortune in repairs last year >£1800 (clutch, diesel pump, viscous coupling, back window regulator etc) but so far this year has been almost trouble free. It does suffer from the mysterious refusing to start syndrome that seems to afflict an awful lot of these vehicles, with no real fix if you read the forums, but you learn to live with it. I wouldn't class it as being very economical either. Best advice if buying one is join the AA (or similar) - at some stage you will be glad you did.

I agree.
We have had our 02 TD4 since new, and to be honest it has served us well and was a good tow car. However in 2008 and 2009 we have spent huge bills on things like fuel pumps, electrical faults etc. Our Freelander broke down last November with a burning smell from the engine and still to this day it's sat on the drive un-fixable. LR top technician (on £100 an hour reading error codes from diagnostics!!) insist there is nothing wrong despite the burning smell and the dash lights coming on when the engine is started. so we have been left with the problem no one can fix.
Be wary about what you buy - a landrover out of warranty could leave you with empty holes in your pockets, you're probably buying someone elses problem.
If you check out the "freelander electrical faults" threads on several of the LR forums you will see loads!!
message to "chealea girl",sorry to hear of your problems, but would you cosider selling i am intrested in a project, you can contact me at towbaraa at yahoo.co.uk and ask for bob
Freelander, towing, PETROL.... ho ho ho. Even though I'd advocate buying British, the 1.8l Freelander engine is an embarrasement to British Engineering. It all started with a cheap cylinder head gasket - it blew at 60,000 miles, the engine overheated and the cylinder head warped. Because the head bolts run right down into the crankcase it meant a complete engine strip and rebuild. About £2000 at a dealer.....
