Then you might want to think again after this......

We bought the car new in 2007, a 2ltr 7 seater auto diesel LTX, we also paid for a 3 year sevice package from WILSONs in Bolton, as security, to look after our new pride and joy.

The 3 year warranty ran out in Oct last year.

Last week we heard what can only be described as a faint whistling/siren noise, and we immediatley booked the car into Wilsons to see what it was, only to be slapped with a £2175.00 bill as the turbo has gone!

The car has only done 45,000miles!....Chevrolet and Wilsons have said basically that 'these things happen', and no goodwill payment has been offered, even though we have been loyal to them, including them doing all the servicing....

We are understandably DEVASTATED!!  You certainly do not expect a 3year old diesel car of 45000miles to have this kind of breakdown, even more so when we are told that dirty oil is what could have caused the turbo to have failed.

We have been offered a reconditioned turbo, but are worried that only genuine parts should be used, and if the turbo has failed once, we really need to know 'why' it did before we pay for another (if we had the money to fix it in the first place).

can anyone help?

Thanks

Dawn

Lack of oil or not enough changes, Cheap oil.

I only cover about 4000 miles a year in my car but i get new oil and filters every year.

These extended service intervals are not for me. Parents Golf is something like 18,000 miles with the long life oil. I make them get it done every year though.

A decent reconditioned turbo may be better quality than your original one.

Premature turbo failure can be caused by exhaust gas recirculation(EGR)valve stuck closed. One reason why 'these things happen' so important to find actual cause of failure. Daewoo diesel, I think.

I wouldn't have much faith in your local Chevy garage so it might be worth getting car repaired at a diesel injection specialist who may source the same parts for much cheaper.

Find an independent and ask how much to remove and refit along with sending your away, as its now out of warranty or just ask by calling the number in the link

When on Hols few years back the engine management light came on the car we had only had a few weeks. It's a Peugeot and lucky I thought there is a Peugeot dealer near by took it there they charged 70 pounds to look at and said needed new turbo etc etc at 2500. Car was 3 years old and had a warranty with a dealer local to us. They picked the car up and me so I could get our other car. They found a faulty sensor replaced it, three years on and car is fine. So just be careful what main dealers tell you.

I've seen a few turbos destroyed when people just turn the engine off after a fast run, without letting everything slow down.
For example, if you pull into the motorway services you need to let the engine idle for three or four minutes. So many people just don't bother, so the turbo is whistling round at 100,000 rpm and the oil supply is suddenly cut off.
I once saw a coach turbo destroyed in less than a thousand miles. The driver was sacked of course.
All this should be in the car handbook. It is in mine. Equally when starting up, you need to let it idle for a minute or two before using large throttle openings.
I'm not saying that's what happened in this case, but driver error and dirty oil are the main causes of turbo problems.

This would have been around 1976 of course & even then the advice wasn't universally adhered to. Still good-ish advice but failure to do what almost nobody does anyway won't cause turbo failure in 45k miles. As I said almost certainly EGR valve stuck shut causing turbo to overheat.

If you read whats on't internent about this car or Vauxhall Antara(same car)theres not much good. Most relates to the diesel engine tho. The same car sold in other parts of the world normally has much larger petrol engine fitted.

i used to have a SAAB turbo that was tuned shall we say approx 325bhp and if the power was used and then you opened the bonnet the turbo would be glowing bright red, so always let it idle before turning off, i know its different a tuned car, but i still do with my turbo diesel, it cant be good it that hot then turning off and no oil supply.

Not 1976 Tentz, about 8 or 9 years ago.  At that time, you were given a warning by the management if you stopped the engine before the turbo had time to slow.  I remember the early Land Rover turbodiesels had a terrible time, but that was too much boost. They seem to have been OK since.

The turbo still does the same speeds, though no doubt oils are better now. I would never dream of stopping my engine within two or three minutes of coming off the motorway.  Not so bad arriving home, when the turbo has (relatively) hardly been turning.  As you say, people don't do it, but there's no doubt they should.

Well yes, but usually when pulling off a motorway into a services, you slow down, drive around car park then park up, couple of mins of engine running slow, so good enough really. Yes it has always been a good idea to allow turbo engine to idle for a bit before turning off but it is misleading to suggest failure to do that would lead to a turbo failing after 45k miles.

I wasnt saying it was the cause just merly stating how hot turbo's get really and the fact they do need a wee bit of looking after. Also saying watch what people tell you re my post and my wife's peugot 307.

Sorry Tentz, but I have to disagree on this occasion. I have definitely seen a turbo wrecked within a thousand miles of new, and the cause was found to be switching off too early.
Of course, you are right in what you say about driving round slowly looking for a space. It is usually enough.
Again, I'm not saying that's what happened in this case, just that the main culprit is oil supply being turned off or dirty oil
Best regards
Jim

Been reading this with interest and rising panic

Yes I have one of these cars,  and am seriously getting disheartened

It came out of warranty in February and since then

Key snapped in ignition       yes I now know the cost of replacing both barrel and key.   As the barrel arrived 3 weeks before the key   It went in had barrel fitted and had a health check.   Well it came out full of health and vitality

3 weeks later went back for key,  no problem there  everything tickety boo    Had another health check  ( yes I know why would you )

Rear suspension on one side needs replacing

Yes,  had both the " well this has never happened before "   and  " well it happens "

So have these cars got some sort of doomsday device in them,  triggered by a 3 year countdown clock or what

O dear, Oldham....now I'm getting even more worried.

We took the car into the turbo specialist yesterday but they couldnt finish all that was needed, so as the place is quite a way from where we live we have left it with them so they can continue with it on monday.

All we know at the mo is that it has passed the smoke test, but didnt really know what she meant!?!

God really worried what could go wrong next, we cant offord to change it.

Would you advise taking out an extended warrenty? would it cover suspensions, turbos and anything else costly?

Dawn :-(
