I've towed with two Octavia vRS models with the 170bhp 2.0TDi engine. Both were economical, stable and towed really well. We towed two different 'vans with ours ... the first weighed 1310Kg, the second 1400KG, so both heavier than your Alpine. Just traded in for a Skoda Yeti which we plan to tow with for the first time this weekend.
If you want more info try www.Briskoda.net where you will find loads of Skoda owners only too willing to talk about their cars ... there are a fair few caravanners amongst them.

I have an Octavia 2.0L TDI with 140bhp engine but in hatchback; my Sprite Alpine is (I guess) somewhat older as it's only 1000KG MTPLM, but from five years' usage, I think you would have no problems whatsover even with the higher weight of your van.

I tow my Alpine 2 of 1160kg with Octavia 1.9 tdi with DSG: perfect tow.
I believe the max tow weight for my 1.9 DSG is 1300kg, so I would suggest that a 2.0lt model and the slightly heavier Alpine 4 would not represent any problem whatsoever.
I have a skoda octavia estate 1.9 2006 model and towed my abbey freestyle round Devon and Cornwall with problem,I am v ery pleased with the mpg, and the performance.

stevo1 my other half has a 140bhp sportline golf estate and have towed caravan with that a few times, golf has a pd engine and is a very strong puller and the scout is a 10 plate with the new common rail 140 bhp and its very gutless compared to the golf.if i had road tested the scout i may not have got it as i also looked at a 170 bhp tiguan.
I have a VRs Diesel. Tows our Lunar (1395kg) to the south of France like a dream. We are just below the 100% but even fully loaded and carrying 2+2 children, we rarely need to change gear. Love the car but am now thinking of an Evoque......
Just reviving this thread as I am also now looking at an Octavia 2.0 TDI PD DSG Estate (2007) as a potential towcar. We currently tow 1150kg, but are intending to move to something bigger next year (around the 1300kg mark).
The weights etc. seem to be fine for our intended use, but I was wondering how stable it is with a van on the back.
We currently tow with a Citroen C4 Grand Picasso 1.6HDi, which is very stable but limited by low towing limits. The Octavia is a somewhat smaller car, so I hope I won't be sacrificing too much in terms of stability if I make the switch.

the octavia estate has a tow limit of 1400kgs unless a 4x4 then its 1600kgs. dont get a dsg gearbox.expensive to repair.
1400kg tow limit is plenty for us.
Why do you say not to get DSG? Do they go wrong often?
