hi

The price of fuel seems to be killing us caravanners.

Can anyone give advice on how to conserve fuel when towing?

Ideal speeds.

Best gears to be in when cruising etc.

I don't know about other vanners, but because of the price of fuel we are not going as far on our excursions as we used to.

Keep your speed down, travelling at 50 mph rather than 60mph on a motorway will save you about 20% of your fuel. Travel at a speed where you will not be continually speeding up and slowing down on A roads.
Ideal gears are different between cars I find that my speed Mondeo is happy in 5th and gives the best fuel consumption when I use that. However with the six speed box the gearing is just too high to use top very often when towing and fifth is more economical. If you are continually having to change down from the gear of your choice then it would probably be better to stay in the lower gear.

For a licence dated 1997 or later you must add together the plated max weight of the caravan and trailer, if the total is 3500 or less you can tow it. You may even tow a caravan with a MAM greater than the cars unladen mass the restriction was removed in 2013

I find that 50-55mph gives me 30mpg - 55-60 lowers it to 25mpg, also try to avoid coming to absolute stop when approaching roundabouts etc if possible.

Bring back the old roof-top wind deflectors, they were very effective.

Otherwise keep sppeds reasonable, steady-state speeds are far more economical that speeding up and slowing down all the time.

Look ahead, anticipate traffic changes before you arrive on the scene.

Find the most level route. Our mpg in Holland was a noticeable amount better than here in the UK, and most of the Dutch side was motorway speeds. Flat terrain is far more 'mpg-friendly'.

We have just been to Devon on the way the computer said I averaged about27mpg coming back I managed 35!!!!!!!!!!!!!

difference!!! we went slower about 50-55 because of high winds but I have also herd that different fuels can make a difference, We did fill up before we set off but only at Morrisons. we have a desiel and the cetane level (octane for petrol) can be slightly different, I read on a different forum that supermarkets fuel isint the same as the premium brands and thats why they can sell it cheaper, would like to know what everyone thinks, I have seen a Redex cetane booster which is supposed to help but the cheapest I have seen it is £8, and if you do the treatment every fillup, I cant see how it would pay unless its very good.

keep speed down - use gears correctly - no stop/start driving if it can be avoided.

What's the average miles per gallon acheived towing a caravan? Well, when you speak to most caravanners the average seems to be around 32 mpg. which is what I normally get too. I recently went to Axminster for 11 nights which is around 185 miles which the majority was motorway cruising at 55-58 mph. on the M42 and M5 to junction 25. I checked my tyre pressures before leaving and put 50 psi. in the caravan (as stated in handbook) and had 33 psi. in the front tyres and 37 psi. in the rear. I set my trip computer to zero and recorded the entire journey. The result was 28.8 mpg. so on the return journey I decided to increase the tyre pressures. Caravan maximum tyre pressures on side wall illustrated 54 psi. so I increased the pressures from 50 to 52 psi. Car tyres fully loaded recommend 35 psi. in the front and 41 psi. in the rear so I increased the pressures as recommended in the handbook. I set the trip computer to zero and did exactly the same route back. Final result was 40.5 mpg. which I was absolutely astonished to sday the least. If anyone had told me that they had achieved more than than 34 mpg. whilst towing I would have dismissed it and convinced they were lying. In 7 years of towing I have now proved a point to myself for the first time but the moral of the story is that I have found the secret to achieving the maximum miles per gallon and keeping the speed to just around 55+ mph. I tow with a Ford Focus 1.6 diesel estate with a 5 speed manual gearbox, 109 BHP with an engine torque of 177 lbs./ft., a towball limit of 75 kgs. with car and caravan match is around 90%. Although much of it is achieved by being in the right corrersponding gear and keeping to 55 mph. I found that by just increasing tyre pressures certainly eliminate the dramatic effect on the drag, but if you are not convinced then just prove it yourself and check the handbook recommendations of both car and caravan.

Whats the revs for peak torque for your car?

Best economy is usually around that figure.

I did a test with an OBDII code reader. 40mph in 4th gear used something like 9% throttle. Changing upto 5th gear and i had to use more throttle approx 11%. I forget the actual figures but i have posted them on here previously.

But the car needed more torque than it was getting in 5th gear to maintain 40mph. Changing down to 4th brought the revs up into the torque band and to where the throttle was barely required.

I found the same in 6th gear. It uses more fuel at 60mph in 6th compared to leaving it in 5th. And thats without the caravan on the back.

Probably worse when towing. Generally though due to the large surface area of the van the slower the better.

But it will depend on the gearing/weight/power etc.

In March / April this year I towed our caravan from Northumberland to Benindorm. 3100 miles round trip so I had lots of time to judge the best fuel consumption for my car. I checked my tyre pressures before leaving. 54 psi caravan and 38 front, 48 rear for the car with full load. My computer readings were as follows. One part of the journey was long, 495 miles in a day, so I averaged 60mph and got 27mpg. When I dropped to 52 mph on shorter journeys I got 33mpg. At 55 mph on sat nav 57 mph on speedo I got 30 mpg. I used cruise control for most of the journey in 5th gear. 6th gear gave me poorer consumption. On the trip from Dover to home 350 miles, the weather was very bad, heavy rain so I averaged about 45 mph constantly changing gear because of big trucks and got 27 mpg. So 5th gear, 55mpg in good weather is good for me.

So 5th at 55 is close to your max torque, Or has plenty of torque for that speed/gear/revs.

You may find at 50mph that changes as the revs drop too low. So 4th maybe more economical.

But you do make one point. TRAFFIC... Nothing worse for economy than traffic.

Maybe not ideal but travel during the night/late evening or early mornings.

That will be a huge fuel saving. I try to avoid Saturday to Saturday holidays. Nightmare.

i keep to the speed limits but the best fuel savings are made when travelling when the traffic is light. I got an extra 7mpg just by travelling late evening rather than during the day when we returned from a site.

and the dealers have loads of vans with sold signs on and club sites are usually booked solid each weekend.
makes you wonder ?

Simple to get the best fuel stick to 56 behind a large truck, parcel companies are best as they are always taller. The results are unreal had 36 mpg over about 200 miles once in my old s max.
