Hi...I have caravaned for 40 years and always had a 1.8 or 2.0 litre towcar and typical 4 berth caravan.
I sold my caravan recently due to storage issues and we really miss it.I am also a tent camper as well which is becoming increasingly difficult due to my health.
I am now having to take early retirement due to my health issues and want to downsize from my 1.8 Focus C max to a more managable and cost effective smaller car that would be able to tow a small 2 berth caravan.
Most of my money would be spent on the car and the caravan would have to be secondhand.
I would appreciate any advice from anyone who uses a similar outfit or from anyone else..

That's the dilemma I have, I want a small car but how small can I go and still be able to tow a caravan.
We do want at least a cassette toilet, not bothered about a shower as never used it in any of our previous vans.
For example can a fiesta tow a small lightweight caravan, if so what size of engine? Or would we need to go to say a focus size car, then I am almost back up to the likes of my 1.8 Cmax
I will obviously be doing a lot of research into this but there must be some people with an outfit similar to what I am looking for.

You can tow with a smaller car but here is my input and how I felt by doing just that. I used to tow my caravan with a 2.0 diesel Ford Focus estate (6 speed manual, 136 BHP & 251 lbs/ft. torque) with a match of around 88% which had a manufacturers towing limit of 1500 kgs. I then down sized to a 1.6 diesel Focus estate (5 speed manual, 109 BHP & 177 lbs.ft. torque) with a 92% match and a towing limit of 1300 kgs. My 2 berth caravan has an MTPLM of 1300 kgs. but was never fully loaded anyway but although the 1.6 TDi was slightly more economical solo than the 2.0 TDi, the difference in performance regarding towing was non comparable regarding standing starts and hill climbs. I haven't actually encountered any problems but because I felt a bit uneasy with a match of over 90% I have decided to buy the right car for the job now which is a Volvo V50 D5 (5 cylinder diesel) which is built on a Ford Focus estate chassis which has a 6 speed manual gearbox, 180 BHP & 258 lbs.ft. torque and a match of 83%. Hopefully the fuel economy is not going to differ much from the 2.0 diesel but I tried down sizing myself for several reasons but I just didn't feel comfortable with the lower weight towcar. Even though I did all the right checks before starting out I just didn't feel comfortable with a lower powered towcar because the stabilty just isn't there if anything does go wrong whilst towing. I would seriously consider what car you intend to buy but I would certainly avoid a car size such as a Fiesta and at least go for a mid size such as the Focus with a bit of pulling power.
I have over the years towed with 3.5 Ltr, 2.6, 2.3, 2.0 petrol and diesel and generally owned 4 berth vans of average weight for a 4 berth.
We haven't really done much research at this stage and that was partly my reason for this post.
Grampian91 ,I suppose I really need to look at the weight of the type of caravan we might buy and see what car could tow with a reasonable margin for error as mentioned by tango55. I do like to stay around the 85% as have always done so and never had a problem.
Thanks Jeff..I knew you would find a solution

I'm not sure I'd be happy towing with anything smaller than a C-Max, although you can probably get away with a Golf (or similar) if you're careful with your weight matching. The modern 1.6 turbo diesel engines (e.g. Ford, VW, Peugeot/Citroen) are very economical and have more than adequate pulling power for smaller caravans, but you still need adequate kerbweight for stability.
As others suggest, it's best to decide what kind of van you want first, then work out what car you need based on an 85% kerbweight match.
i tow with a nisssn note 1.5dci ntec and have a compass reflection special edition 900kgs mtpl has everything in it (cassette toilet/shower/hot/cold water/cooker/heating) tows great not underpowered and i get roughly mid 40s mpg towing

To get a quick idea of what's possible with all the different models there are about take a look at the Cuddles website Just click on each manufacturer and then you can quickly scroll down through all the models and see the towing limits. Obviously you need to have some idea about the sort of weight of van you would hope to tow. I do wonder if the top priority is a smallish car then you might need to look at the possibility of a folding caravan or Folding Camper, or as someone had already said a realy lightweight van such as the Freedoms or smaller Eribas. As a by the by our towing limit is 1000kg and we have a Dandy Folding Camper (500kg MPTLM) and its a dream to tow and masses of space when it's up.
We tow a Pathfinder with a 1.4 Scenic diesel and the lowest we have recorded is 47mpg towing. Its normally 57+ solo.
With 2 double, permanently made up beds, both with interior sprung mattresses, it has everything we could want in a caravan except a shower unit.
Easy to tow, easy to stow and easy to erect, it really is luxury on wheels and with a wee porch awning with a couple of lounge type chairs there, well its just the Bees Knees.
Now I'm not saying that there is not a caravan out there that would give us the same luxury for the same money and is towable with a small car, but I have never seen one.
