If its the 1.9 tdi and the DMF has gone, you can get it converted to a single system for less than half the cost of a DMF
Mine cost £340 fitted at the dealers.
If its the gearbox this is the best place

don't count on it, the RAC have twice not been able to diagnose simple issues with my car, once was clogged, but not blocked fuel filter, other was a blocked fuel line in the tank.
Because their computer would not talk to my car, they couldn't help at the roadside, even though I had a pretty good idea what the problem was (although the blocked fuel line took a bit more finding)
Their recovery from both was fine (well, except that the first time he flat towed me on a bar, which I have since found out he should not have done because my car is too heavy for that (sedona) second he towed my caravan to the site, and I drove the car solo.

It was some part of drive shaft gone ford only part replacement!all done last week at a cost of £284...... Then yesterday the DMF is making a terrible rackethas and is about to give up he ghost £700 bill to follow! If the car was all payed up I think I would look for something else..
Assumng its the older shape Galaxy/Sharan/Alhambra then the infamous intermediate drive shaft, apparently only Ford/Vw part which is massively underengineered (unusual for VW), however for those in the know a redesigned part is available from a firm in Poland which is very much more up to the job and half the price of the dealer parts. The drive shafts are a weakness and it is usually the CV joints that go, with the tell tale clunk on take up or steering vibration on acceleration, usually its the drivers side that goes first. Waste of time replacing the cv joint as whole shafts are available from motor factors for only a fraction more and you could save time on the labour, i have just paid £61 plus vat for a new shaft for mine, any mechanic can do it in a hour tops with a ramp, two hours on your drive.
It is possible it could have taken out the DMF but there are other things to check as well, it is known for a small bolt on the input shaft of the gear box to come loose, and if it comes off the whole bolt connecting the input shaft to the gearbox disappears, if your luck you can fish it out by draining the gearbox oil. Also the selector cables are known to stick and can be freed with a bit of lube.
Before anyone goes taking the box off to change the DMF and clutch check all these first as they are known faults, however £700 for a clutch and DMF is good, I paid £1300 two years ago.
Before anyone has a pop at Ford, remember the older shape Galaxy Diesel is all VW apart from the Blue badges and Radio, the main chink in its armour is the 6 speed gearbox and drivetrain as it is with all VW group TDI's, which is awful (and this comes from my crew mates son who is a VW specialist mechanic), still at least I get mates rates :)
There is a wealth of information here

A new CV joint is all thats normally required, I have had one of mine go but lucky for me I heard the tell tale signs of a load clicking sound when turning a corner so got it changed before it went.
You could change it yourself get a complete one from a scrappy for around £40 take the wheel off undo the large nut in the centre then remove the cir-clip and disconnect the bottom ball joint and remove the break caliper, then pull the suspension outward and one end of the shaft should come out, then pull the shaft out of the gearbox, then fit new one in reverse order. making sure the inner joint clicks home
Its actually much simpler than this on the galaxy Bob, Undo the centre hub nut (bigggg spanner and lots of torque/brute force), undo the 6 bolts connecting the shaft to the intermediate bearing, undo the two allen bolts securing ball joint to front hub (no need to split the ball joint) give it wiggle and off it comes. Replace CV joint on your work bench-much easier or replace complete shaft (cheap enough) reverse to put back on, with a new centre hub bolt as its a strech bolt.
