What if I only load the caravan up to a max of 1500kg would this be ok ?
Why did you not check your cars towing capabilities before buying an unsuitable caravan ?
In answer to your first question if you keep below 1.5 tons yes it would be legal providing you passed your test pre 97
or have the necessary B+E entitlement on your licence .
You would be well advised to weigh your van on a weighbridge when partially loaded to make sure your its not above 1.5 tons the legal limit your car can tow.
Do not just assume that that the few items you put in your van won't take it close to your cars limit as things like motormovers if you have one fitted weigh close on 35kg and a leisure battery will weigh anywhere between 18-25kg .
I would weigh you van empty and again when partially loaded if want to keep within the law or alternatively by a heavier more suitable vehicle that has max towing weight above your caravans 1575kg
Thanks for that,I have weighed the caravan when loaded and ready for going away for 2 weeks hols 1485kg...The Caravan spare wheel in car plus awning and all our clothes..Car fully loaded and the caravan is near enough empty.. And no motor mover fitted..

I take you passed your test before 1997 allowing you to drive a car and caravan combination above 3500kg ?
If your unsure the way to calculate this is to add the MPTLM of your van 1575kg and your cars max loaded weight together if above 3500kg you must have the necessary entitlement on you licence .

I'm a HGV driver so hold the relevant driving license..
No, the GTW is the maximum all-up train weight of car and trailer/caravan.
In the Discovery handbook it states that for towing at the maximum weights, only the driver and one passenger is allowed on coil-sprung vehicles, more on air-suspension (self-levelling) models.
Just thinking about what you said you were going to load in the car to keep the 'van below the max weight.
Personally i think the gross plated weight is the legal weight. As i wanted to rent a trailer and they wouldnt let me collect it with a big rover with a 1500kg towing weight.
Even though the trailer weighed much less unladen.
I had to come home and collect the 4x4 to collect it.
But i have not seen anything on the gov websites to prove either way.
And if your an HGV driver i am surprised your going to take the risk.
