Unlikely a petrol car will be cheaper to run. When buying a 6 - 8 year old car though a petrol car maybe cheaper to fix.
Your into dual mass flywheel and common rail diesel fuel systems, Which costs £££ more to fix than old tech diesels.
Spending £1000 on a petrol or diesel then the diesel will be cheaper to run as depreciation is virtually zero.
so only the mpg and fuel price comes into it.
You missed out the most important bit though. What are you going to tow with it?
What max towing weight do you need?
When looking for a new car the Octavia was mentioned, But its a golf sized car now a passat/mondeo sized car.
As Grampian says, it all depends what you want to tow. I haven't towed with any of the above (yet), but I'm currently looking at the Octavia 2.0TDI Estate. One thing to note is that the Mark II Octavia (2005-2009) has a higher kerbweight than the newer Mark III, so will generally be more suited to towing duties (depending on the weight of your van). Of course, if you're looking for 6-8 year old car then this shouldn't be an issue. I expect if you currently drive a Bora then you will find the Octavia very similar to drive.
The Bora is an Octavia with a boot lid instead of a hatch, but the mark 2 2004 to 2009 has more room, if you go for the 1.9 tdi the bulit proof version, and the DMF goes it will cost £350 to £400 to fit a single clutch system in you cannot get a single system for the 2ltr versions
The 1.9 tdi may only be 105 BHP but it pulls like a train and for around £350 you could get it professionally tuned to 140 BHP
My 55 plate 1.9 tdi Octavia estate has now covered 211,000 miles
The 2ltr tdi 140 bhp has turbo problems, so go for the 1.9 tdi or 2ltr tdi 170 bhp

500kg unbraked it right on the limit for some earlier Skoda Octavia's. I think the later ones are higher.
Yep the early ones are max 500kg unbraked, so is the Honda Accord. My current car is 600kg unbraked, and our trailer has an unladen weight of 270kg, so can't imagine we have a load of 230kg in it
Honda Accord auto is fab car but there will be no room for your van because you will have to tow a fuel bowser to run it.
Mazda will just be a constant headache and the wheels corrode something terrible(one over the road from me had 3 new sets in a year, under warranty because of corrosion)
Seat and skoda would be better with the 1.9 tdi engine because it's bullet proof, the 2.0tdi has a lot of problems with oil pumps going south,(pin in the drive comes loose,VW vehemently deny any problems but if you google vw forums then it's a big issue especially at this mileage)

Thats the dilemma I am facing my current car has cost me £2500 in what I call non wear & tear items, £800 of which related to new clutch and flywheel, at least with an automatic I would not have this. There again their is quite a difference in mpg and insurance.

Its a shame that Mazda can't seem to protect their cars better from rust

I just wish the 1.9 came with six speed box as my 1.9 bora came with, makes driving on motorway very relaxing

They do in the 4x4 estaite version, it runs in normal 2wd and if it detects the fronts slipping the rears come in as well automatically, no buttons to press
Take a look on the auto trader web site and find a skoda near you
Just a thought you may get lucky and find a late mark 1 Octavia 130 bhp then you will have the best dam engine to come from VW

The unbreaked weight is taken from the 1.9 SDI, the bottom of the range, the 130 will be able to tow 600 plus, and 1500 braked
Have you had your trailer weighed when loaded???

Thanks the octavia in the link is a little too far away for me, any local octavias are either over priced, too old or high miles or comination of all three.
Had a look at a Octavia mark 1 today, the wife did not like the view out of the rear window and has said she would not want to reverse it, and has she has to drive the car on occasions it seems the Octavia mark 1 is ruled out.
Will try to find a Octavia II within our price range, and try that out, but we both like the Ford Mondeo which seemed to have better visibility that the Octavia mark 1
