Due to financial cicumstances we got rid of our caravan 2 years ago and switched to a tent. Although we enjoyed camping its just not the same as the caravan. Our circumstances have now changed again and we could manage to run a caravan again. The only problem is I can't afford to change my car and what I currently have is a 1 litre citroen ax. It does have a towbar fitted and I currently tow our camping trailer with it. Is there any sort of caravan I can tow with such a small car. Normally it's only 2 of us who go so a 2 birth would be fine

Eriba Puck should be ok, about 500kg empty. Usually a few on ebay. They do fetch good prices though. Check underside chassis frame for rust.

Surely if your fortunes have changed for the better its time to get rid of that little old car

In therory you can tow up to 100% of the vehicles unladen kerb weight.

As long as what you are towing is braked.

I have a Diahatsu Hi jet van for odd jobs with a Kerb weight of 1500kg. I wouln't dream of towing anything over 650kg lol

They haven't changed that much. I didn't buy the car to tow with. I bought is as it  is very very cheap on tax, insurance and petrol and I needed something to run backwards and forwards to work and to run around in. If I changed it then I wouldn't be able to afford to go away so would be no point in a caravan or even a tent. If I can't find a caravan that I could safely tow then I would just continue with the tent

That's a bit of a sweeping statement; have you any towing data for this model? All usual online sources don't even mention the AX range now, other than it having a kerbweight of only 690kgs.

To be honest, I think even Tentz suggestion would be too extreme once the Puck's got a payload on board. The AX was a very lightweight 50bhp car which was/is good for the job of running around and light trailer use.
Wife had one some years ago and TBH, I'd wouldn't consider towing with an AX, sorry.
Our's eventually went went it split open like a tin can in a very minor shunt. I have a vague recollection too of it being restricted to 500kgs, towing limit but couldn't be certain.

Don't be put off, Citroen is a great little car. If your budget is tight, check out teardrop caravans. The Teardrop Caravan Club of Great Britain page on facebook. If your a bit of a DIYer you can even build your own, I am, to tow with a 945cc Austin A30.

I would not tow anything other than a small camping trailor with an AX, oits too light and with a 1.0 litre engine would struggle.

agree with 664DaveS  a 1 ltr engine will be hard pressed to pull any caravan.look at GOING caravans as these are the lightest i know of and possibly too heavy.also look at teardrop vans.

Personally I would agree with Big Al, the AX would struggle engine wise even if you found a van with the right weight match. Also if its done a fair few miles it would be working the engine too hard for such a small car and you would probably suffer the increased possibility of breakdowns.

I would look at possibly changing the car if you are able,  if not you mentioned you enjoyed camping and want to step up from a tent, have you considered a suitably matched trailer tent?

You cannot tow up to 100% of the car's weight. You may tow up to the maximum permitted (and tested) by the manufacturers. This will be found in the handbook for the vehicle. To exceed this would certainly void the insurance and the car would not cope.

Personally I would tow no more than a small trailer with this particular car.

Car, occupants, fuel, tow bar, luggage, caravan, caravan payload with a citroen AX? it isn't going to do it safely.

I think I'd be inclined to hang on for a bit and see if you can afford to upgrade early next year (although that means you might miss out on some winter bargains).

Couple of other options though if you really can't wait

1) See if you can find someone that might swap cars - there may be someone out there near you with say a 1600cc that wants to downsize and as long as the running costs aren't too much more you might be able to do it. Try your local facebook For Sale page.

2) Do you have any family or friends that would tow your van for you if you cover their costs even if just for a couple of breaks next year by then you might be in a better position.

3) As above but borrow the car and cover their additional insurance costs

4) Have a look at hiring. If you can get one with a towbar it might work out cheaper doing this for a couple of breaks next year than buying another car  you will still keep your AX's cheap running costs and then as things get better you can look into buying a bigger one . There is someone on here that does that and because it's too expensive to run around in a towcar all year round

5) Finally - have a look at a seasonal pitch at a nearby site and tell yourself it won't be for too long just until things are on the up (bit expensive though I think)

Hope it all works out

btw all of the above is on the basis that an AX won't tow a caravan. I used to have a GTi and that used to struggle when my OH got in the car17

Thanks everyone. I didn't really think I'd be able to tow a caravan with the AX but thought I'd ask just in case as we really did find the caravan so much more comfortable and enjoyable. I guess we'll just have to stick with the tent for now and see if we can afford to upgrade the car in a year or 2
