hi,am using this car to pull a bailey ranger 520/4 2001.
only just got van and towed well for over the 100 miles i travelled home.going to fit a bulldog stabiliser though as it hasnt one on hitch, got a bit snakey at 60mph so this should help i hope.car is just about ok to tow this i think?
It says somewhere this is a bit heavy for your car you might be able to pull 1300kg but your Kerbweight is around that as well .You can only do 60 mph on motorways and 50 on single carriageways ..
my car total was approx 1550kg and van is 1250 fully laden was slightly over the 85% but rest was fine.thought the 85% was a guide line? if u want to you can pull max weight cant you?will be changing car next year anyway for something abit bigger but need the mileage and diesel motor as i travel to work approx 70miles a day.was looking for a cheap xtrail as second car but will prob trade my car in and get something newer and suitable for towing and good mileage
thanks for reply
If the caravan snakes at 60 then you need to sort that before you fit a stabilizer, do you understand about noseweight & did you set your tyre pressures correctly for towing?

1550kg ? .
The Astra Hatch 1.9 cdti sri has a kerbweight of around 1300kg and a Max towing capacity of 1300kg .
So your van at 1250 kg MPTLM is not a good match for an Astra .
If you were to load the caravan to its MAX weight and also heavily load the car you could exceed the GTW
according to my book in car kerb weight is 1408 for my model (z 19 dth engine) not 1300 as you state the van is 1250 fully loaded.when i said the van was snaking i meant that how i felt it whilst driving at 60mph didnt look like it was in mirrors though,it has no anti snake device at moment but im getting a bulldog stabiliser fitted so hopefully resolve problem was fine at 55mph..noseweight is 75% in book but not checked this as dont have equipment.never added extra air to tyres but will do that next time i go out in it,
You need to set car tyre pressures to fully loaded pressures & ensure caravan tyre pressures are correct. Max noseweight for car should be in car handbook, probably about 70kg. You do need to check noseweight on caravan, length of wood & bathroom scales will do the job. Do all that you will probably find it tows ok.

Check your V5 for the correct kerbweight , the Astra 1.9cdti is not anywhere close to 1408kg kerbweight
Don't get any kind of stabiliser until you have sorted your problem. If you already have an imbalance, the stabiliser will mask it until one day it leaps out and bites.
Does look a bit heavy to me. It's 85% of kerb weight, not loaded weight.

I thought that as well, but the op is correct when he says the handbook puts that car at 1408kg
I would go by the details printed on the V5 as this is the information that would be used if you were pulled over and weighed.
It's alright stating what various websites say, but how can you be sure your talking about the same vehicle?
It depends on the year of the car etc, so the only correct information is that on the V5.
