Autos are great for towing would not go back to a stick change.Im sure one of the mechanic guys will come along and keep you right on what to look out for.
I drive a manual V70 D5. Happy to tow with a manual box as I feel more in control. Fuel economy is better too as on long trips (solo) getting 48-50 mpg. Not bad for a large estate, normally fairly well loaded with goodies from France !!!
Another vote for auto - we are on our second auto now, both have been towers and have been wonderful. I think with some older cars there used to be problems with gearbox cooling when used for towing but I think that's no longer an issue with modern cars. My dad uses a 10 year old Mondeo auto and that is also fine.
I have been towing with auto's for many years. Cars include Citroen ZX, Ford Granada, Toyota Estima, Skoda Octavia, Hyundai Tucson, Hyundai Santa Fe. Never had any problems relating to the auto box. Definitely wouldn't go back to a manual.
------------- I intend to live forever. So far, so good.
we have the D5 XC60 (215bhp) and it tows a dream. the great thing with the volvo box is you can put it in to a semi auto mode if you wish.
i use both the full auto and semi when i want a bit more say in what its doing as i can see the road ahead....and when in full auto it has made it so much easier on some routes.
just changing to the D3, same car. i'll never go back to manual for towing car!
Wow. I don't tow, but I'm really surprised at how many people love automatics.
I drive a manual car, and my mum has an automatic (Fiesta), I've had to drive it a couple of times in emergencies and to park it for her (she's rubbish at parking) and I hate it!! I just don't feel in control at all.
Is it something that you get used to? Because at the moment I would never consider an automatic at all.
