hiya peeps im thinking of having my egr valve blanked off as i heard theres a few places near me offering this service ive got a few cars but the one im thinking of having done is my 2006 toyota avensis 2.2 d4d as ive had nothing but trouble with it.
So as anyone had this done ?
does it work ?
whats the upside / downside ?
thanks
my egr valve is simular to the one on the mondeo they have to do somthing to ecu to stop engine management light coming on ive looked on ebay cant find owt for avensis 2.2 d4d
gcms2012 thats why im trying to get more info im not too sure that i should be letting someone mess around with ecu its not under warrenty anymore but if they bugger it up it could be very expensive to repair
On another forum a few weeks ago someone had the same idea. I did give a warning that it was not always that simple on on some motors.Any way they went ahead and done it, then a week later was winging that the dash lights had come on like the illuminations and it was now in the dealers.
Theres hours of reading on the internet about this, google 'egr valve blanking', nothing is conclusive but I would guess what works fine on older cars will get progressively less fine on newer cars. This thread will tell you no more than is out there already.
Blocking the EGR on mine will bring on the engine management light also.
It doesnt cause any other problems. But not many people want to drive around with the engine light on.
As a test to see if the EGR is causing the trouble then block it and see. Choice after live with the light or find out if the EGR itself is the fault or is something that controls the EGR at fault?
I must admit I thought it was a thing of the past.
I blanked the EGR off, on my old Bongo diesel, and it resulted in slightly better fuel consumption and lower emissions, with no problems at all. However, several mechanics have told me not to do it on any common-rail diesel engine.
When I had Land Rovers a lot of people fitted blanks to the tdi Discos and Defenders, kits were readily available, but I have heard it is not easy on later cars due to the ECU.
Ithought about it on my Saab (GM diesel engine) but have been advised against it for reasons earlier posters have stated. Let well alone I think.
------------- DS-There's more to life than football!!!
I had a 2006 Mk2 Zafira and thought about doing this, as apparently Fiat use the same engine and the EGR is blanked at the factory with no adverse effects. In the end I got a good deal on a C4 picasso so I let someone else have the problem.
------------- Dance before the storm and don't look back to where you've been.
If you can keep your head when all around you are losing theirs, you obviously haven't grasped the gravity of the situation.
well im none the wiser ive talked to two different garages today one that offers this service and one that doesnt and one says it will be fine and one that says if it aint broke then dont fix it what to do what to do?
There should be no warning lights on, on the dashboard when being MOT tested.
I remember a 'bent' taxi driver, he used to remove any lights that were on before going for a MOT test. The ABS and engine management lights were the usual one to be removed!
