Hello - oh wise ones!
We were towing on Friday and twice on steep hills, we had a smell of burning. It didn't happen on every steep hill, at a low speed.
We've towed with the same outfit for over two years and are well within tow limits etc.
So what could be causing the smell, and should we be overly concerned?
Thanks in advance.

It's a Volvo V70 2.4 Diesel 2003.
We thought it was like burning rubber.
Thanks

Slipping the clutch at all? Check the brakes also.
Are they releasing properly? Not binding?

If the burning smell is in the car, going uphill it sounds like clutch on the way out, ie slipping.

Sounds like the clutch getting hot. If its ok now you may have got away with it. We had this in our old Passat having got stuck in traffic on an incline. I knew the smell was the clutch and spent the weekend worrying about getting home. It was fine though.
If in doubt get it checked.

Thank you all.
We've just towed home, around 100 miles, and no problems at all - no smell, we don't feel that the clutch is slipping.
Following on from your advice though, it's now booked in to get checked, "just in case".
Thanks again.

The easy way to check the clutch is to pull the hand brake up and rev the engine to about 2500 rpm. Dip the clutch and engage 3rd gear. Gently release the clutch. It should stall the engine. If it doesn't then the clutch needs replacing.
Don't do this often or for long though because if it is slipping it will wear it out quicker.

I wonder did the driver drop down a gear when going up hill or try to get up in the highest gear.
Going up hills without changing down will give the same symptoms

Although a slipping clutch is most likely I would also check tyre pressures. A hot running tyre can show up when you slow down ( for hills as an example) and this permits hot fumes to reach the car which otherwise do not. We had this once on a motorhome with a rear offside tyre pressure too low.
