My vectra estate 1.9 diesel pulls the van no problem (it's about 83% match) but the clutch overheats badly reversing and it is useless on grass/mud.   It's frustrating as doing the manoeuvre is not the concern, the car lets me down.   I didn't want to buy a motor mover for the van or a 4 wheel drive car but looks like I'm going to have too look at this. Thinking of a freelander 2 seem to be good tow cars, but are these expensive to run in terms of mpg, tax, insurance and tyres?

I am also looking for the freelander 2. To be honest after the 1.9 and size of vehicle it will seem more expensive but in its class it is one of the most economical. You are looking for a vehicle for a specific purpose so you have to accept the accociated costs.
Can't buy a Rolls and run it on a Mini budget.

Try not to over rev the engine while reversing. It is a diesel with high torque so should push at low revs. Reverse gear is about the same ratio as second gear.

You will find even manual Landrovers smell if more than a few shunts, a mover is far the cheaper way out.
I previously had a Landrover from new and you need deep pockets

I expect it to cost more than at present, just seeking views on those that have them on running costs. Forwards on grass I set off in second low revs.   Would an automatic be a better option?    Problem yesterday was one of front wheels spinning on grass 😞

i get the same from my vectra and have heard others say the same just smells but not had a problem with traction on grass unless it`s been really wet

Mover every time. Such a doddle to use, and no one should feel embarrassed in disconnecting to place a 'van on site. I can reverse with the best of them but why strain anything on the car, especially something that will cost an arm and a leg to replace?

I am not trying to teach people to suck eggs,But when you reverse a caravan the brakes slip over a cam and release the brake shoes away from the drums,and you reverse.The caravan should go backwards as easy as it goes forewards,some times the brakes have been adjusted too tight to the drums and when you go backwards the shoes go up agaist the drum ,but there is not enough room to slip over the cam and release the brake .make sure the brakes are adjusted properly first ,and what i normally do before reversing is let the clutch out with a gentle tap on the hitch to make sure they are in the reversing position I hope this helps

No wonder clutch smells taking off in 2nd gear,try using 1st gear and no revs.

Thanks for replies. Not an issue going forwards.   As far 2nd gear and low revs i believe I read this advice the booklet given by caravan club as part of their day and a half towing course. Seems to work to stop wheel spin on wet grass going forwards . It was reversing ok initially don't think carAvan not working correctly, the issue seemed lack of grip of one wheel on the patch of grass I had to go on to get the van on the pitch. I may be wrong though so will ask for it to be looked at on its service. I dont understand "let the clutch out with a gentle tap on the hitch" - could you explain?

I dont understand "let the clutch out with a gentle tap on the hitch" - could you explain?

Nor do I understand. Is this a hot or cold tap?

Fit some town and country tyres to the front wheels, this will give you plenty of grip, or go to a scrappy and get a pare of steel wheels the same size and get them fitted to them then when you go away just change the fronts,

To revers just lift the clutch gently without the accelerator and the engine power should be sufficient to push the van back, only use the acceleration if required but with ballet shoes on

When I say a gentle tap I mean let the clutch pedal up the first time a little quicker than normal,not voilent ,just a little to push hitch back and release brakes for reversing

Reverse gear is only very slightly higher than first and a lot lower than second - see here
