Who do you use for breakdown cover for the caravan?
Currently with the RAC and the camping and caravan club Arrival scheme. (edit)
But each year they keep increasing the cost, I phone them and they reduce it down again.
I need to check but im sure its £50 more than last year?
Nearly £190 for the top RAC cover and the arrival cover. Which takes you to the site and back home if the car cannot be repaired.
What do you use and how much do you pay roughly?
I dont want standard cover for the car because that doesnt cover the caravan if anything should happen to that.
I didnt realise that until a few years back.
The RAC 'Arrival' cover is taken out with the Camping & Caravanning Club and not the Caravan Club as their breakdown cover is Green Flag 'Mayday' cover so I think you have your wires crossed somewhere. We are covered by the RAC 'Arrival' and I'm glad we are as our car and caravan had to be rescued recently and bought back 185 miles. Without this specific cover we could have only had the car rescued and would have cost us so much per mile to have the caravan bought back. At the end of the day it's not worth the gamble because if the unfortunate does happen it could cost a lot more.
I am with Arrival and have breakdown and recovery for car and caravan return journey.I do not bother with at home or foreign cover and i paid £93.50 this year.
I have just moved to saga, as my insurance is with them, this year its cost me £35.00, for normal roadside and relay including caravan, and my caravan is also covered for breakdown attendance, the £35 was an offer for this year and doubles up next year to just over £70, thats about half i was paying with the r.a.c.
------------- you are only as old as the woman you feel.
There are some good deals if you take out breakdown cover with car insurance but if you read the terms and conditions you will find that they will only recover the car and caravan together if the the caravan is in tow at the time of breakdown. With RAC 'Arrival' they will rescue both car and caravan even if they are detached providing that the car is within a 75 mile radius to where the caravan is pitched, so if the unfortunate ever happened where you break down solo with the car say on holiday for example then an extra fee will be applied to rescue both units if your car cannot be repaired at a local garage. Maybe the RAC 'Arrival' is expensive in comparison to other breakdown cover but at the end of the day you get what you pay for and to me it's peace of mind knowing your fully covered.
Yeah thats the issue, I dont think that most people realise that if the caravan breaks down or needs recovery then they wont be covered on a standard policy.
Petra you say covered for breakdown attendance, What does that cover? Say a wheel bearing failed. Would they come out and say yes its failed. Have a nice day?
I have the full cover with the RAC, At home and onward travel etc. They will supply me with a hire car for 2 or 3? days also.
Just a bit of a jump from last year.
I didnt realise there was a distance limit on the cover. But 75 miles is usually more than enough for most occasions i guess.

I've heard lots of good reports about ADAC . Being German they are supposed to be very good for European trips and sub contract to the AA in GB apparently. Not sure what their policy is on caravans though.
We use GEM but your caravan will only be recovered (due to a problem with your car) if it is attached to the vehicle.

Yes the caravan is covered as I explained previously what the RAC 'Arrival' cover is precisely. If you take out standard RAC breakdown cover policy then this only covers the car which excludes a trailer of any description that's why the 'Arrival' policy is more expensive which is what the OP was questioning about initially regarding the annual increase for this specific cover. We broke down in Dorset a few weeks ago to which our car was taken to a Volvo dealer in Poole but as they could not repair it in a reasonable time scale or offer us a courtesy car the RAC then recovered both car and caravan which were 10 miles apart and returned us home at no extra cost because that's exactly what the RAC 'Arrival' covers. The AA have a good reputation but they don't provide a specific cover like Green Flag 'Maydown' or RAC 'Arrival' so you only get the same breakdown cover as you would with your car insurance which then would probably be a better deal cost wise. Don't take my word for it though, read the terms and conditions of any breakdown cover first like I do and see exactly what you ARE covered for. If in doubt give the breakdown company a call and ask if you are covered with a trailer and if you are, ask if you are also covered if the vehicle and trailer are unhitched and separated and I bet the answer is no.
The RAC cover does seem quite good, If the car breaks down on the way they will take us to the campsite. If teh car cannot be fixed in a reasonable time they will take us home afterwards also.
Shame the premium comes out in August and possibly during the time we are away.
Thats my hobby fund money :) I have lots of hobbies :)
tango55 have you managed to get a discount on the cover?
I'm not sure if we did get a discount or not when we initially took out the RAC 'Arrival' cover in September 2012 but it cost £151.20 for the year so like yourself don't know how much the increase will be this year. Having used the service in a time of desperation I wouldn't like to take a gamble on not having it.
We use Autoaid at £39 per year which includes everything including home start, all that AA and RAC cover but for only £39. Reason its so cheap is if anything happens you pay upfront and then get your money back which does come back within a few days. This covers your car and caravan and obviously passengers.
Will auto aid cover you if the caravan breaks down?
Say a wheel bearing goes. Most policies wont cover this. Although they will arrange recovery for you but you foot the bill and because its classed as a commercial recovery its £££++
Just checked and yes your covered if the car breaks down, And they can tow the trailer/caravan. Bit not covered for the caravan itself.
