Having just returned from our first trip on our return to caravanning, I thought I would pass on my experience with towing with the above car.
I had posted a thread a while back asking if anyone owned or had experience of this model and I got a few very helpful replies but no actual owners of this model.
So hear goes..We were towing a Swift Challenger 400se with caravan MIRO of 865kg and coming in at 1060kg laden on this trip. Although max allowable is 1100kg with payload of 205kg.
Our route took us from Fife to Aviemore using the A9, a road I am fairly familiar with.
We had a good run heading to Aviemore with no hold ups and I was amazed at how few gear changes I had to make.
Was able to keep at a steady 60 more or less all the way.
I am realy impressed with this car, solid as a rock on the road and a great match for the caravan.
Mind you I had loaded the van as you should, its like going a bike..you never forget.
I kept the nose weight at 70kg, the recommended is 75kg and some pundits say 65kg, so I went in the middle and it was the right thing to do as I said it towed a treat.
Our return home today was a bit slower due to some roadworks and torrential rain but the car just plodded through it all
I have generally always towed with petrol cars but feel diesel engines have moved on so much (even such a small engine as a 1.6). Should have changed years ago!
Not worked out fuel mpg yet as only got the car on friday and towbar fitted same day and of to Aviemore the next day, so will need to get to grips with working out the dash info screen etc..
Will do that next trip..2 weeks from now.
Hopefully this might be of some help for anyone thinking about this car for towing.
Its a basic review just giving some basic facts so apologies to all the techies

We got the car on Monday and are really pleased with it. Towbar was fitted on Tuesday. We haven't towed yet but are planning a test run this week before heading to France next week.
I used to tow with a Focus 1.6 diesel estate and although it was extremely good on fuel getting 38 mpg. towing and 70 mpg. solo the real down side was reversing onto a pitch. The clutch was a real stinker for hours afterwards that's why I changed to a Volvo 2.4 diesel which is built on a Focus chassis. Now I can reverse without the sniff of any clutch slip at all as it's much more of a work horse than the 1.6 diesel Focus is. In comparison to other 1.6 diesels on the market it's a damn good car but not really in the category for towing purposes.
I don't know if you were towing your Amara with the Focus but the Amara is considerably heavier than our Sprite. As for reversing we have a motor mover and tend to use that rather than make the car do the work.

Can see where you are coming from but its horses for courses as they say.
I have a focus 1.6 tdci and tow at a 82% match, I am chuffed with the pulling power and fuel consumption.
I have only been on two trips with this combo and only had the smelly clutch once which I think to be fair you can get with most cars depending on the driver/situation.
It goes without saying a 2.4 diesel is more powerful and can presumably tow a heavier van but we are all different in our choices and needs.
I certainly wouldn't say it is not in the category for towing purposes, it does what I need it to do and for the van I have.
I have been towing for 40+ years and had various tow cars from 1600cc to 3500cc and so far can't find fault with this little car. Ok I wouldn't choose to go over the Alps but I bet it could do it

We've been on a test run with the car today and so far so good. We drove up some fairly steep hills and the car pulled the caravan with ease, much better than our Vectra did. The real test will obviously be our trip to France. I'll report back in due course.

Look forward to your feelings about the car..above all else enjoy your holiday..

Well we're now back from our holidays and I can report the car performed excellently. We did just over 200 miles and averaged 30mpg towing. Fuel costs are considerably lower than with our old petrol Vectra.
That 1.6 diesel is common to several makes of car. As well as Ford you will find it in Citroen, Peugeot, Volvo, Mini, Suzuki SX4 & others, its probably the most widely used car diesel engine in Europe.

Glad you are still pleased with the car and happy with its towing performance.
Its also a good car solo, excellent mpg and £30 road tax per annum.

Ours is only £20 road tax :-), once again better than the Vectra which was £260!
Mmm! will need to check that on the disc, it came with 12 months tax when we bought it in July.I've never even looked at the disc.. I thought the dealer said it was £30.
