I now have my Santa Fe and am slowly coming to terms with the fearsome diesel consumption (with a best achievement of 37 mpg on the way to Scotland, I can see I'm going to be doing a whole lot more walking!!). However, I wasn't expecting it to come without a parcel shelf - and have just been quoted £500 to get one from the Hyundai dealer! So I wondered whether anyone on here had had the same experience, and had found a workround or fitted a generic one (if such a thing exists!). I'm not keen on loading stuff in the boot and having it all on show!
Oh and best look for a scrap motor and get its shelf.

No - would have been pretty happy with that if I'd have been towing! It was minus the van on the first long test run - the old Audi would have been up in the 50s! Having said that, it's in for new bearings, tyres, tracking etc tomorrow so things might improve ...
Yes, have started phoning breakers but nothing so far - should be working today!

weve got a parcel shelf....strange.....
Think it was an optional extra at point of purchase, from what I can gather. The bloke at the Hyundai dealership was rather surprised at the price himself!
just spoke to husband creature and our car is a 5 seater so it comes with it but with the 7 seater it is an optional extra....

aha, that clarifies it! I don't suppose he has any further light to cast on the topic, it'd be gratefully received as I'm coming up blank from Leeds breakers ;-)?
37mpg for a big, heavy 4x4 is damn good - I never managed more than 34mpg when I had my SF and that was only on the rare occasions I did a long motorway trip - 26mpg was my average round town.

If it is anything like the 7 seater Suzuki Grand Vitara I used to have, the parcel shelf is just a cover type one that can be attached either behind the back 2 seats or extended to cover from the middle seats with the back 2 folded into the floor.
There are a couple of these types on ebay at the moment, one for 2012 onwards and one for 2006 (I think) to 2010 or 2012 (I forgot which one).
Oh, and 37mpg ...... my Rangie averages around 23mpg and can get up to around 28mpg on a long run, as long as you enjoy the driving of it.
i understand that there is no parcel shelf for the 2010 version 7 seater nor is there an optional extra otherwise I would have had it. Not sure on the latest version or older versions.
Thank you all - Nelmo, I feel marginally happier now I know it's not just that I'm as heavy on the right foot as my husband alleges ;-) I think it was the initial shock of spending £90 to fill it up, only to seeing the diesel practically evaporate in front of my eyes that caused the consternation!
Saftlad - is yours a seven seater? OH had a bit more of a look as we were going out last night, and said that there didn't appear to be a proper place to fit it to - does that sound right for a seven seater, is there some sort of fixing clip that yours came with? I can't check ours now as it's gone to the garage for a bucketload of work doing before we take it away :-(
ST - it's a 57 plate. There is one on ebay but it has a broken fitting, and given that I can't figure out how they would attach, I reckon starting off with a broken one might just cause a whole lot of confusion!!
James - our Hyundai dealer parts guy was struggling to make sense out of them being so expensive and hard to get, as a parcel shelf is pretty important from a security and safety point of view. He said they were available but not on the normal parts list, they cost £500 and were part of a package. However, the Hyundai dealer in Middlesborough has this one santa fe parcel shelf
Hi I've got a 2010 7 seater and there are no mountings for a load cover although you can buy one with mountings you fix to the side panels. I intended to buy one but never got round to it and haven't found it an issue. The tint on the read windows is so dark you cant really see what's in teh boot.
I agree it is an over site I thing the issue is that with the 7 seater you would have to remove the cover to raise the seats and there is limited space to store the cover.
Enjoy your Santa Fe, we've had ours for 3 years and love it. It's a superb family car.
"Just wait until you tow then see how fast the fuel gauge goes.you will be filling it faster than a F1 team"
Possibly/maybe an ever so slight exaggeration.

I would be very pleased at 37mpg, my Terracan can manage 22/23mpg towing, and 29/32 solo, but it is a 2.9 Mercedes diesel engine,I'm not complaining though.it was my choice of towcar, and it has been very reliable and comfortable to drive a long distance
