Yes, you are spot on.
If they ever loaded the caravan to its fullest (obviously, 240kgs worth of stuff) then it would be heavier than the car.
They only take the bare minimum to keep things balanced better; however, the 85% guideline is not a legal requirement, so we spend many a time arguing over this.
LR have stated a max tow weight of 2000kgs for the car, so he is legal, just not recommended.
Has been towing caravans for many, many years; personally, I think he is barmy.
My caravan/ car balance is 63%; but years ago, after my useless 2002 Galaxy ate its own turbo, we had to tow caravan back with a hire car the RAC provided, a C5. This was a 95% mix; it got such a snake on, a violent kick, on the M6 between Preston & Lancaster, it woke the other half and dog up. I must say, if it had been later in the day not first thing in the morning, I would have smashed into anything that was in the middle lane; if it wasnt for me knowing to ease off, steady run straight across two lanes, it may have ended up quite differently.
I will never push that 85% rule again; really quite scared me & Polly.
A clear reminder of why the 85% guideline is there!!!

Chris
