... unfortunately it is not one that SkodaBob will want to rant on about.

I borrowed a Sept 13 issue of WhatCar magazine to read over lunchtime and in it was a report from Warranties Direct showing warranty claims for vehicles in different size catergories.

There on the list was the Skoda Octavia 2002-2008 ..... listed as being the worst of the family cars on the list with the highest cost per claim, no of claims, etc.

In the city cars list 3 of the 5 bottom places were filled with different vesions of the Mini, the Mini One, Mini Cooper and the John Cooper Works

I was going to point my dad in the direction of the Skoda Octavia/ Rapid for his next mobility car but not so sure now.

I have absolutely no doubt SB will make some kind of positive from that negative.

Any car reliabilty survey is flawed & this one is no different. Only a fraction of car owners will take out extended warranties & if more of them were Skoda owners then it will show more claims. Fact is all modern cars are as good or as bad as each other. The ones that break down will be the ones that get little or no servicing which many owners seem to skimp on these days.

Despite Bob's ranting, Skodas are no better or worse than any other car comparing like with like.

What you have to remember as well is that many taxi drivers also use Skoda Octavias mainly because of their low running costs and reliability so in reality the real truth is to ask the people that own and drive them daily rather than take warranty statistics from a motoring comic. Some magazines like to brainwash people to which some people will take things for granted what they read and some don't.

On subject of awards-CC Towcar awards this year is a bit flawed,

They quoted a Sorrento KX2 at £20K, they are actually £24, and criticised it for being unable to locate the wheel inflation kit! ( There is a full size alloy spare under the back)-well there is on mine!

Also complained that stuff would get wet in the back of a pick-up! ( Who would order one without a cover or hardtop?

Brother and sister in law have just got a Superb diesel estate, its very nice and well equipped, they do not tow. He hadan Octavia as company car which did a large (hard driven) mileage and was very reliable.

We are sticking with Kia as we like our  4 x 4 (unless lottery comes up then it will be a Range Rover!)

Does anyone actually buy a car based on these surveys?

Most of us have our own mind made up before we get the cheque book out, based on personal experience, friends/company cars and so on.

Buying a car based on what are pretty obviously flawed reviews seems crazy.

I create a spreadsheet with the shortlist of cars I'm thinking about, with a column for major areas (eg. power, mpg, style, seats etc) and a score out of 10 in each column. Then add them up to decide which is the best.

Obviously, I then adjust the figures so that the car I really wanted all along comes top

Had three Octavia vRS diesels ... covered 30000 miles in each, probably around a third towing, none of them had any problems at all.

Not my experience at all with my Octavia 2 on 55 plate which I've had from new. It has performed impeccably.

Same here - I had a 140bhp 2.0TDI from new on a 55 plate which I had remapped to 170BHP+ after the manufacturer warranty ran out. I didn't take out an extended warranty and only had to have wear and tear items replaced until I traded it in about 18 months ago for my 2.0 Superb Combi (ie. the estate). My wife has a Fabia 1.2 and she loves it and drives it like she stole it. We both have the DSG 'box.

I still have to sigh when people tell me that Skodas aren't bad these days (only last night the guy who came to service our garage door said just that).

All makes of cars have issues - look at Toyota. They were once the doyen of safe motoring and my wife had her Corolla for over ten years without a problem. Nowadays hardly a month goes by without another story in the motoring press about a Toyota safety recall.

Now on to our fourth Skoda. The Estelle was interesting; but since joining VAG group they've been great. In fact, they claim a whole range of awards see here. In terms of customer satisfaction and build quality they are near the top.

A report of the Warranty Direct survey from elsewhere shows Skoda at No.13 (in a list of 38), and highest of the VAG group brands.

Not sure therefore what What Car are reporting then.

Mind you, I do think warranty claims on the following model might be a bit on the high side. LOL
