Hi, maybe not a towing topic but just thought that I'd let people know that on a couple of recent trips along the M74 I've seen (for the first time ever) a handheld speed camera hiding on the hard shoulder. The first was just on the downhill stretch before it goes to two lanes prior to Glasgow, hiding behind the large grey overhead sign pillars, the next was southbound this week just before Abington services, once again he was stood on the grass and his car parked just off the hard shoulder.

You also need to watch the M77 between Ayr and Glasgow. The cops like to catch people out there too

This actually begs a question... Speed cameras are supposed to be located in accident blackspots,to reduce accidents, normally motorway mobile cameras are on bridges so the operator is out of danger, any driver heading up the M6 Cumbria or M74 will tell you that practise is popular!
However, if the mobile operator is standing on the side of a motorway that is a blackspot, does that not put him in grave danger? if a risk assessment was carried out it would show the danger and the best avoidance is to not be there!
I just thought it was very sneaky.

Also whilst I'm ranting!! 80mph on that road in good conditions is slow, however 60mph in some conditions is too fast, why don't we adopt variable speed limits for dry/wet as in Germany etc. or vary the limit with variable signs but go up to 90 in safe areas (most 3rd laners drive at 90 anyway) and reduce in busier/ less safe areas? it works in Germany

I have a simple philosophy when it comes to this

The driver chooses to accept the licence and in doing so accepts the rules for it - they could choose not to accept the licence

If after accepting the rules they choose not too abide by them then they choose to accept any consequences

With that said then who cares where they put any sort of cameras etc because it makes no difference to the above

The only drivers who do not agree are the ones who think they are above the law and think they know better

simple philosophy

I see speed traps regular on the M74, in fact to be quite honest they are everywhere you go, between cops at the side of roads and camera vans on bridges. It just not worth the risk.

on another note whats your views on average speed cameras go on the entire length of the A9. It has been suggested that HGV's will be limited to 40mph.There will be a tail back from Inverness to Perth.

Its an absolute joke the A9 and needs to be dual carriageway from Perth to Inverness but rather than spend the money doing that the cheapskate scottish government go for the easy option and decide to put average speed cameras for the entirety which will do nothing but cause frustration and anger from car drivers who are forced to follow HGV's at 40mph .
There will be more and more carnage if this camera scheme go's ahead as car drivers will take chance's to overtake long lines of traffic when it's not safe to do so .

Quite so, but it is difficult fighting our selfish nature. Maybe the penalties should be more severe.

Neil and lena

Yes it terrible, they quote roads such as the A77 where they have been very successful, and I agree, But what they fail to say is that they only work on the A77 because it is already a dual carriageway, therefore you are able to pass a slow moving truck or even the odd tractor without risk. The A9 with its long stretches of single carriageway will as you say lead to frustration and risk taking. The dual sections will become race tracks and guess what, yep you can still stay below the average speed.

I do not condone speeding and I promote safe driving, but the government will make a bad situation worse.  Unless you are a regular user of this particular road you may not fully understand the stupidity of the proposal.

I couldn't agree more - the A77 scheme worked well because it was already dual carriageway. The fact that such a major route like the A9 is STILL not dual all the way is crazy. I certainly only travel on it in holiday times. But hubby drives all over Scotland for his job and HATES his Inverness trips (loves Inverness, just not the roads!) because the journey is so tedious. He's a very careful driver and doesn't speed (more than his job's worth). But many people use the A9, there's loads of freight and it beggars belief that it's not a priority to get sorted out. But that's the Scottish Government for you. Only interested in getting themselves into the history books, than actually doing anything practical!!! Grrr.

trucks on the A9 used to be able to travel at 48mph on the single lane road with no probs, police would not book them as it kept the traffic moving. now its police scotland traffic cars from glasgow and edinburgh are on patrol the limit is enforced at 43mph so all trucks slowing down and massive tailbacks.massive money making excersise

I live in North Wales, on the Coast rd. One section a dual carriage way, with multiple junctions on it, used to have a National Speed Limit of 70mph.

It was after the fourth accident in 18 months, which necessitated both sides being closed, to allow the Air Ambulance to Land. Due to the severity of injuries. That the speed limit was dropped to 50mph.

The number of sever incidents, reduced from 4 in 18 months, to one over the last four years. And sadly that was the death of a pedestrian late at night. There is no foot paths to use, at the point of the incidence, and the Police still do not know what the pedestrian was doing there.

So personally I'd like to see speed limits remain as they are. But Penalties massively increased. With a minimum fine of £300 for going 10mph over the limit, as well as 6 points on the licence. going up to £500 and a 6 month ban and mandatory re-test for 20mph over.

All revenue raised, to fund Traffic Police Officers.

Raising the speed limit, to pamper to the idiots who speed on Motorways at 90mph, will just see them going at 110mph, because everyone else is doing 90mph. And we will see even more carnage on our roads, not less.

Oh and Driving Tests in Germany are a lot tougher than the simple two part on in the UK. And the Auto Bahns are a lot heavier and tougher policed than our Motorways.

Dave
