We have just ordered a new Vauxhall Astra ST 2.0 cdti. and as it has reverse sensors fitted as standard I was wondering if I will need to somehow switch them off when towing.
who is fitting the towbar for you? if it being factory fitted, then it should come with 'vehicle specific' towbar wiring - if that is the case, then a lot of cars know when something is being towed and disables the reverse sensors automatically.
It is worth checking with your car dealer though:)
absolutely, they can fit a vehicle specific loom too, if thats what it takes - on a brand spanking new vehicle thats what i'd be going for - ordinary towbar electrics have been known to mess up a cars ECU, and if that happened it wouldnt be covered under warranty (i dread to think what an ECU costs nowadays!)

As others have said using the manufacturers wiring loom and upgrading the software should turn them off, but it matters little as they will only beep when in reverse and you do not spend much time in reverse with a caravan behind.

For a licence dated 1997 or later you must add together the plated max weight of the caravan and trailer, if the total is 3500 or less you can tow it. You may even tow a caravan with a MAM greater than the cars unladen mass the restriction was removed in 2013
We have just bought a Dacia Duster that has Reversing Sensors.
In the book it says that there is a switch to turn off the bleeper when you are reversing with a trailer, however this switch was not fitted and I am now in a dispute with the dealer over this.
It is bloody annoying having this darned thing bleeping away when I am trying to concentrate on getting the trailer where I want it, but apart from when I am reversing, the sensor is not activated.
I don't have those problems; I just switch my hearing aids off so can't hear the bleep. Helps me cope with the wife giving me instructions when reversing as well, much prefer using the mirrors. Works a treat, best bit of kit I ever got.
Personally, after the amount you have spent on the car I would have the dealer fit the tow bar to ensure no wiring or sensor problems. I wouldn't risk my warranty on anything else.
We ended up paying £700 to Honda for our tow bar but after the cost of the car it was worth it for peace of mind.

The dealer rarely fits them, they subcontract the job to a specialist towbar fitter. £700 is an awful lot, mine cost under £400 with a detacheable towbar and the Mitsubishi wiring loom.

Have you got a motor mover? If the answer is yes, then your question is largely irrelevant as reversing sensors only operate when in reverse gear.
Kia sorento 2013 model has a button to switch off rear reversing sensors. But the reversing camera still works - well handy for hitching up and making sure the car and van do not jack-knife during sharp turning manouveres. If you cannot switch of sensors either fill ears with cotton wool or sing loudly to drown out the beeping!!!
